To point out just how absurd this rule is, consider that of the 41 players named to the NL All-Star squad, only three (7.3%), Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday, and Yadier Molina, will play in tonight’s game seven.

well.. first off, that’s wrong. It’s two players. Holliday will not.
that aside, that’s still better than “Because it’s an odd numbered year”
Starting lineup is irrelevant to the rule. Regular season won-loss record doesn’t matter. This is post-season.
The Mets even managed to lose something this postseason without even playing…many are saying this game 6 WS comback is the best ever. Ironically it links Tom Seaver (86 Red Sox) to Nolan Ryan (Texas) again.
Not to mention C.J. Wilson gave up the homer to Prince Fielder and took the loss!
i think players are wrong on this. what meter would they rather use? each team’s win loss record is based on varying competition, and makes it difficult to plan the schedule in advance. using interleague results is equally uncorrlated.
there is no perfect way to divide a bedt of seven.
i like the current format because it gives evch league’s best players a chance to settle the score, while mirculously turning the all star game into a meaningful event.
the fact is that a seven game series is partially dtermined by luck. as i’ve gotten olde, i tend to view he real vhievemnt as etablishing the season’s bet win loss record, but even that can be misleading.
