Quickie post from me.
Matt linked to this which was the easiest way for me to hotlink it given my status in real-life -> Darren Rovell: Mets are desperate for season ticket sales | MetsBlog.com.
I reject the initial premise.
I imagine Mets ticket sales are down from where they want them to be, but i reject “desperate.” Fish where the fish are (oh no, I just opened the door to Marlins jokes).
The people most likely to buy tickets are those who have in the past bought tickets. So why not reach out to them.
Seems like business smarts to me, not desperation.
I actually would call it desperate. They’ve probably tried “in state” former season ticket holders and likely got a poor response. Maybe they’re hoping the out of staters are a little more uninformed and can be suckered into buying more season tickets. Likely as not, those former ticket holders will be just as cold to the Mets’ overtures as anyone else. Who wants to pay hard earned money to see an inferior team, especially if you have to travel any distance to see it? Dear Mr Alderson, make a note to yourself: in order to fill the seats you have to put a better team on the field. That means better moves than last years DJ “Fiasco” Carasco and Ronny Paulino. You can find better talent than that without spending big money.
I’m ‘out of state’ and have had a plan in the past (although my plan was while I lived in NY). If the Mets made me the right offer, I’d re-up, I just don’t have any burning desire to commit to specific times and games.
But desperate to try to sell tickets? Maybe the salespeople are desperate to sell tickets, because the Mets are culling the fat in their deptartment?
Shocked I Say!
If we had more details on what “out of state” meant, it would be easier to tell if this was desperation or smart sales tactics.
Trying to sell to potential customers in New Jersey or Connecticut? Smart. Trying to sell to former season ticket holders who now live in Florida? Desperate.
