Looks like the Mets are starting to fill out the team.Out is Angel Pagan in a trade and in are some arms and an outfielder.
The latest signing was Frank Francisco.
The Mets and free-agent reliever Frank Francisco have agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal, according to FoxSports.com.
Michael Baron from Metsblog on Frank Francisco.
Francisco’s had an up and down career, losing his closer’s job on several occasions – and he once lost his temper with a fan in Chicago, ultimately throwing a chair at him and getting suspended. He fits the mold of a ‘closer,’ as he’s a power pitcher who records a lot of strikeouts. However, he’s erratic and wild in the strikezone, and so he can be unreliable with a questionable presence on the mound.
Steve Popper from the Bergen Record reported that the Mets trade Angel Pagan for OF Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Martinez.
From Matt Cerrone of Metsblog.
This is interesting. It’s like the Mets and Giants swapped outfielders and are betting each player can return to their 2010 level of production. Pagan and Torres are very, very similar players. Torres is older, but has more pop and patience at the plate (which speaks to two qualities the Mets are looking for most these days). Pagan is probably a better contact hitter, but I could retire if I had a dime for every time I heard about Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins complaining about Pagan’s demeanor last season. Both players are injury prone, yet capable of stealing 20 bases, while playing good, solid outfield defense (though the Mets say Torres is slightly more reliable in the field).
According to Adam Rubin the Mets also are signing Jon Rauch for $3.5 million and trading for bullpen help.
Francisco is not too bad…like a fatter Armando Benitez with more command.
He’ll have to change his number though…no Met can wear 50 this year…that belongs to us fans!! Yeah!!

It’s a good thing Goon never sleeps. The Mets have to stop doing things that require me to be on the internet after 8
Collins didn’t like Pagan. There was also a lot of talk that he wasn’t a “gamer”. Pagan was a fourth outfielder at best.
I have no issues with these deals. They don’t make you jump up and down but at least there doing something. Pegan was apparently a problem in the clubhouse, and played with his head up his rump last year. Omar would have given him a 2 year extension off of that so at least Alderson was proactive. Maybe a good change of scenery trade.
It doesn’t make me want to run out and get my Spring Training Season tickets again, I can tell you that. I guess Pagan was a clubhouse cancer, and they kept talking about needing a Bullpen and closer.
I think we need toi get some starting pitching, but I know we can’t afford and have to want till the “Bottom of the Barrel” people are left.
If this is the case what is the big deal about getting a closer, if we are going to be so far behind from bad starting pitching that we never get to use our closer.
I guess these trades help the club, I just hope they were not trading out, just to give the fans something and take their minds off the Reyes move.
Rich you get access to the Mets 30 days a year. Go enjoy your team. They’ve been bad before, they will be bad again….but they will also be good again.
