John A. Torres: After 34 years, this fan lets go of the Mets | FLORIDA TODAY | floridatoday.com

Here’s one of the all-time fron…Mets fans checking in.  The bold is mine.

My latest breakup has lasted 34 years and I’m not sure I will ever recover.

It started June 15, 1977 and the divorce was finalized on Sunday night, Dec. 4, 2011 when Jose Reyes — the best New York Mets player since Tom Seaver — left Queens for a new address in South Beach.

It is now officially over between the Mets and I.

Like most breakups, we tried to make it work. There were nice memories to look back upon like the 1986 World Series or the last-ditch effort of 2000, but really, it was too little too late. The seeds of deterioration were sown on that fateful June night in 1977 — dubbed the Midnight Massacre — when the Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds over what amounted to be a dispute of about $25,000.

The team finished in last place for the next three seasons and has never fully recovered.

The Mets never recovered from 1977?  Like from 1984-1995 when the Mets were the more popular team in New York?

Seems Mr. Torres only enjoyed baseball when the Mets were in the World Series.  Enjoy your Marlins Mr. Torres.  At least until the fire sale, then you can jump teams again to the next trendy winner.

  1. Mr. Torres sounds like one of these fans who would consider a one hit shutout a bad game because the pitcher didn’t throw the no-no. So John A. Torres what I would say to you is BU-BYE! Don’t come back, we don’t need you nor want you around, you sir are a poser. Enjoy rooting for the Marlins from what I’ve seen of the fanbase down their you should fit in nicely. And again stop STOP comparing this to 1977 for the love of God it’s not the same thing!

  2. If you really read the article (Shannon and Dom13), and go to the very last line of it and you will see that Mr Torres is now rooting for the Tampa Bay Rays, if that makes a difference

  3. That the Mets have gotten to the point where some people will actually draw a parallel or make a comparison between Jose Reyes and Tom Seaver is as good a sign as any that it desperately needs a change of course.
