The Scoring Third: The Guessing Game: MLS NY2 Stadium

An interesting blog post that suggests 126th street would not be considered for a soccer stadium.

we can rule out several locations:

Long Island – Outside the urban core

Staten Island – Outside the urban core

Meadowlands/Hoboken – Red Bulls territory

Belmont Park – Ruled out by Garber’s admission

Flushing Meadows/Citi Field – Outside the urban core

Hudson River Locations – Too close to Red Bull arena/territory

  1. I was pleasantly surprised to see this article link today. I actually read this blog yesterday, and also found it interesting that MLS does not see the Willets Point area as a viable location. At first I thought why not, you have space and a major subway line. I’ve been keeping an eye on the redevelopment project for a while. I don’t think that they’ve started razing any of the auto body shops surrounding the stadium yet. It’s a big site, nearly 62 acres to be developed (and still seems years away from completion), so I don’t know where a soccer stadium would now work in this area.

Link to the redevelopment project: http://www.nycedc.com/project/willets-point-redevelopment for those interested.
