Now the 1990’s will get rolling. Baerga is a stud and well on his way to the Hall of Fame. It’s not like he’ll wind up playing for the Long Island Ducks someday.
The addition of Baerga addressed one of the Mets’ primary needs, “more pop in the middle of our lineup,” said General Manager Joe McIlvaine by telephone from Tennessee, where he was visiting the Kingsport Mets. It also allows Edgardo Alfonzo to step out of the shadow of Kent, as both Alfonzo and Baerga are now expected to fill out the infield with shortstop Rey Ordonez and first baseman Butch Huskey.
