I am firmly in the belief that a person wearing a visiting teams hat while they are playing against the local team is fine. You are an out of town supporter of your team? Welcome to Citi Field. Are you going to get some good natured ribbing probably. But the stuff like this that is happening around the country is ridiculous. The IDIOTS that fight with other fans because they don’t root for the same team are just so low.
From Yahoo Sports.
According to the report, Fortese suffered severe head trauma and a skull fracture, and had to be revived at the scene by an off-duty state trooper. He’s now listed in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
It’s said Fortese was attending the game with Taylor Queen, who traveled over three hours from Virginia to meet him at the ballpark. It was their second date together and it was going well until the two fans alleged in the assault noticed he was wearing a Yankees hat.
Sadly, that is what this entire incident stemmed from — a decision to wear another team’s hat. It then escalated to truly sickening proportions.

Why can’t someone who likes the opposing team enjoy the game? I mean it has happened before. Last week at on Memorial Day The 7 Line section gave a guy wearing a Yankees jersey the business. That guy was enjoying messing with us when the Yankees were up in the score and you can tell he enjoyed us giving it back to him too. I don’t think he ever felt like he was in any kind of “danger” because he was a Yankees fan in a group full of Mets Fans. I did however here how a Yankees fan did throw a beer at some of the Mets female fans at Yankees Stadium. Seriously? Why? Why does watching a game have to come to this at all?
Don’t get me wrong. I know their are some in the Mets Fan base that are like this too, but this is all getting out of hand. I had a great time at Wrigley a few weeks ago. There was back and forth chanting between Mets Fans and Cubs Fans, but I never once had anything thing negative or threatening said to me when I was one on one with other fans.
I want to know what causes this phenomena. What makes these people even think this is all right? Is it because they think they are in a crowd that they can get away with it? I bet these are the same guys on twitter who are trolls also. There is no reason someone can not go to another teams building and cheer for their visiting team. Did this all start from gambling? Did people get frustrated when rooting for their teams and another team was winning and they took it out on the opposing teams fans(just a theory)?
People grow up. This is a game. Enjoy being out in the sunshine, fresh air, and being able to escape from the real world for a bit. The only thing worse then fans fighting in pro sports are parents and coaches fighting with each other and the officials in little league and high school sports. This is not worth going to jail or hurting/killing someone.
I will admit I do have a pet peeve when I see people wear jerseys to a game for a team that isn’t even playing that day. A hat I get, but a jersey meh. I just usually shake my head and keep moving on.
I used to get shit all the time when I lived in St. Louis. Some people are just assholes.
It’s interesting that you would say that. I was chaperoning a trip in st. louis 2 junes ago. It so happened the Cards were home so I decided to go to a game(being that I never expected to go there again). Now I was wearing a mets cap, and they were not playing that day, but it was the only hat I had with me in that blazing hot town. Ticket office was rude, vendors were rude even the customer service guy was rude giving me directions. It’s a friggin cap!So much for the tradition of hospitality from the fans of st.louis( sorry I know that was long)
I get picked on when I go to Braves games here in Atlanta, but it’s all good natured, and I give as good as I get.
I’ll bet if you look at the ages of the people involved, they’re in their late 20’s and early 30’s. I wish I could remember where I read that there was a study that showed that most fan rage occurs in that age range.
I have gone to many other stadiums (Including Old Yankee Stadium) in my Blue and Orange and while I get razzed I never felt in danger. I routinely go to PNC in my colors and have never been physically accosted. I simply don’t get it and these people should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I still feel for my brother in EMS Brian Stow. All he wanted was a day away and some scumbags decided he was a target. All I can say is stay true to your colors. There are plenty of real fans to hang with.
Back in the early 90’s, I got punched in the eye for cheering for the Tribe at yankee stadium. The brute was about 6’2″, a few hundred pounds of steroids and drunk. I’m a 5’3″ girl. He was ejected. I’m lucky he didn’t crush my eye socket. It was a horrible experience but doesn’t stop me from wearing my Indians shirts.
As far as people wearing other teams jerseys even if those teams aren’t playing…it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. They’re a sports fan and they like their outfit. If it makes them happy, then I celebrate the diversity.
The last time I was in Philly for a game, I had a glass bottle thrown at me for wearing a Santana shirt… Also of note is that there are no glass bottles sold in CBB.
I live 20 minutes from CBP and have attended several Mets-Phillies games over the last few years. I get some friendly razzing but have never encountered anything bad – whether it be language, things thrown at me – nothing.
On the other hand I felt both horror and a bit scared several times at Real (old) Yankee Stadium. At the All-Star Game I was wearing a Wright jersey and some idiots several rows behind me really were lighting into me. There was beer thrown my way (not a full one) and I was physically threatened – and this was the All-Star Game! There were guys in Red Sox jerseys there too.
Have never encountered any issues anywhere else
I live in St. Louis and have attended a few Mets games here. Once I was heckled and cursed at by a Cardinals fan. Of course, that was when I sprung for expensive seats down low. It was some drunk, rich punk. Every time I sit in the cheap seats, it’s all good natured ribbing. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. The one thing, though, I do wear my Mets gear if I go to a baseball game and they’re not playing. I just want to represent my team. I’m not a Cardinals fan, so I’m not going to wear Cardinal things. I do think it’s a bit fun to search for different teams represented.
I think fandom is a red herring here. Healthy people do not suddenly become violent upon seeing the colors of an opposing team. The folks getting into these fights are using the situation to vent existing rage. That it’s happening at a ballgame is incidental. (Except for the alcohol part of ballgames…that probably exacerbates things. But it still doesn’t create them.)
It’s kind of like blaming marriage for spousal abuse. It’s missing the point.
