Gary was a great player, and a great individual. As a writer though, he’s on par with most other players who pen their own autobiographies.
The purpose of Still a Kid at Heart: My Life in Baseball and Beyond seemed to be more to promote Gary as a potential major league manager than a look into his great career. I still treasure this book though as it is signed by Gary to me.
“The Gamer” by Carter in 1993 is a traditional autobiography. The stories on how he won the “Punt Pass and Kick” competition as a kid and he time with the expos is really cool. There is a lot of religion in there along with some mommy issues because she died when he was young. Quick read and worth it for Carter fans especially for the Expos material.
