Do you like the Mets towel thing? I don’t.

I fear this towel thing catching on in the stands. I don’t care if the players do it (although I am a believer in acting like you belong in the major leagues), but I worry about it catching on in the stands.

To me, it feels like something west coast fans would do. Like thunder sticks or monkey nonsense or whatever else I pay no attention.

I fear showing up in Queens and having a bunch of people waving towels. Just doesn’t seem like what WE do.

  1. metspolice it’s not mainly about the fans, it’s about getting the players involved and excited about the game. The fans should get into it

  2. summerrito Hey_its_Don metspolice what’s with that monkey comment? Sounds racist to me.

  3. metspolice I wish WE didn’t go to home games. That is much worse than waving a towel.

  4. RobbieNYK summerrito Hey_its_Don metspolice That comment is in regards to the Rally Monkey in LA.

  5. metspolice I’m all for it if it gives the team something to rally around. But if they start losing and continue doing it, I won’t be a fan

Why would that sound racist ? unless you refer to certain people as monkeys.
Your comment sounds more racist than someone saying monkeys
Did you know that Monkeys are actually animals

    I agree who cares
and it started as a joke towards B Colon when he hit that double.

  8. fromheretoLI metspolice If they continue winning games they can wave washcloths for all I care.

  9. jessegrauman metspolice I love it. The last time they had a team “thing” was the claw. Since Reyes left, they’ve been boring and bland.

  10. fromheretoLI metspolice like what “we” do? I dislike that. There is no NYM way. If this team can get excited & positive around this do it!

  11. The_GrassyNol metspolice LOL what “we” do is cut costs and start a disconnect with fans.

  12. fromheretoLI metspolice exactly hahaha I just think if the team can get into something as dumb as swing a towel let them ride it out.

  13. If there’s anything that gets Mets fans excited these days, we should embrace it. What “WE do” in the Citi Field era is suck all the joy out of watching a baseball game. If people are having fun waving towels, let them and don’t worry about it.

  14. Some people probably said the same thing about rally caps in the 80s. The towels might not be as original, but at least they’re showing some spirit.

And the 7 Line Army uses thunder sticks all the time.

All in all, I’m way more worked up about the “oof” that got added to the Let’s Go Mets chant. Can we squash that instead?

  15. Jacob_Resnick metspolice Players demonstrating they require a contrived, bush gimmick in order to stay involved/excited is an AWFUL msg.

  16. pfmarino That grunt sound has been around since the early 80s and I’m kind of proud that it has survived over 30 years.

  17. @fromheretoLI The_GrassyNol metspolice Actually, more like, cut payroll to recover from an era where the decisionmaking was as stupid as what WFAN callers suggest on a daily basis.  That’s how we got to have a $150,000,000, 70-win team.

I much prefer the current approach, which is to spend money when it makes sense, and build from within, and ignore the bitter, angry, spiteful section of the fanbase.

  18. Sparks3rdCoast metspolice oh please you should be applauding them for realizing the funk they were in and an attempt at turning the ship

  19. Jacob_Resnick metspolice Was producing without grandly celebrating every single like a T-ball team not an option?

  20. Sparks3rdCoast metspolice I mean if you really want them to they can just sit and do nothing when their teammates reach base

  21. Jacob_Resnick metspolice Well, they don’t have to act quite so surprised by it.

  22. I’m all for it.  The team needs something like that, why not bring it into the stands?  It’s a great way to bring the fans and players together.  Mets games have turn into people going to Citi Field while the team plays, I miss when people went to the game to actually watch the game and be a part of it.

  23. @3D pfmarino Oh, it was YOU!

Nah, put me down in the “Hate It” column on that one. Much more dramatic to hear that brief moment of silence in the chant than filled up with “oof” for no reason. That’s how I remember it myself from the 80s glory days. Guess I wasn’t paying attention as all these kids snuck onto the lawn.
