.@Mets need to play meaningful games in AUGUST before worrying about Harvey in the playoffs

I am going to lose my mind with this.

“The key for us is figuring out a way to manage his season so that he’s available to us if or when we get to the postseason,” Alderson WNBC’s Bruce Beck on Sunday night.

via Sandy Alderson wants Harvey to be available in September | Metsblog.

Hey Sandy, Terry and COO Jeff Wilpon – how about you play a meaningful game in AUGUST before you start worrying about the postseason.

Those games in April count.  If you think Harvey is your best then use him.  You can worry about September if you’re lucky enough to get there.

Maybe you’ll have a 20 game lead on August 1st and you can give him a rest then.

Maybe you’ll decide “screw it” and not do what the Nationals did, since in retrospect they are still waiting for their pre-destined World Series.

Maybe Matt Harvey chills in Vegas and twists his ankle at a Starbucks and misses three weeks.

We can’t predict the future, so saving bullets for a future that may never come makes no sense.

Win games.  Win as many as you can.  Play your best guys.

By the way, are “Meaningful Games in September” a good enough goal?  I will be debating that with Jason Fry at the 2015 Queens Baseball Convention (January 10th at McFadden’s Citi Field.)  Come see that and other panels, Mookie Wilson, Wally Backman, Mr. Met and more.  Tickets available at QBC15.com

  1. Agree completely. I get that if you look at each of the 162 games as must-wins you could go insane, but……aren’t they kind of are? I’ve never been one to laugh off an April loss as “oh, it’s only April.” Certainly not after ’07 and ’08, when we missed the playoffs by ONE GAME. When you miss the postseason by a single win, doesn’t it drive home the fact that you need to win as many as you can?

If the Mets are cruising come August — and I’m talking ’06-level cruising here — sure, maybe miss a Harvey start or two. I love that they’re being so confident — I’m sensing a confidence I haven’t really sensed in a while — but let’s not put the cart before the horse.
