Time for Mets to trade pitching for bats and bench

mets danny heep jersey back

Two things.

1. I know that not every team can be the 1986 Mets.

2. I observe that ownership is slow to open the wallets.

However….

Here’s a team with maybe a chance to do something, but the offense is ATROCIOUS. I keep obsessing over this tweet from Jared Diamond…

Who are you choosing from in a big spot?

Real baseball teams have options. Let’s take a look at the 1986 Mets. Depending on which lineup you started, here’s some guys you could pick from…

30 year old Mookie Wilson. Maybe he could get a hit and steal a base.

Future MVP Kevin Mitchell

Future 30/30 guy Howard Johnson

Solid major leaguers Danny Heep and Lee Mazzilli

Tim Teufel probably being your relatively “worst” choice, and he was in a starting platoon.

The backup catcher Ed Hearn.

The second tier outfield would be Mazzilli-Mookie-Heep!   That might start in Queens this afternoon and those guys are all 60.

The Mets continue to scrape by on this mentality that maybe if everything breaks perfectly then maybe they can win a Wild Card and maybe something could happen.  Then again, sometimes Matt Harvey blows one pitch and loses.  Do you want to risk that in a one game playoff?

Let’s get serious here Mets.  Enough with stocking so much starting pitching that we’ve stopped even mentioning Montero and Wheeler.  Time for bats and bench.
