First off, let me say that I would whole-heartedly like to thank the Mets for bringing back Banner Day. As I said as part of my publicly rallying to Dave Howard way back when, let’s try this and see what happens.
Well, for whatever reason, and I think this year lack of promotion had something but not all to do with it, we landed at about 50 banners, down from 343 or so at Banner Day 2.0 a few years back.
So thanks Mets, and while I hope you continue to do it for years and years I can understand if you don’t. We gave it a shot.
Which brings us to Old Timers’ Day. Give it a shot.
Next year provides a perfect excuse to have one Old Timers’ Day in that it’s the 30th anniversary of the 1986 Mets. Seems a natural.
On this week’s I’d Just As Soon Kiss A Mookiee podcast, Jason Fry and I discussed OT Day with guest Greg Prince. One of the interesting ideas that came out of it was the idea that maybe you don’t need to do OT day every year. What if we held it every few years? Maybe that would make it more special. I kind of liked that idea – and the same might hold for Banner Day. Maybe we treat these like the Olympics or the World Cup, and 2016 is an OT year, 2017 is a Banner Year, etc.
The OT Day discussion starts at 33:00 below, or you can download and subscribe to the podcast via iTunes here.
50? I had no idea. I had plans that weekend and couldn’t make it, but I went to the first two of Banner Days Redux. They were a lot of fun. If I remember correctly, the weather for Banner Day this year was fantastic. I wonder why so few showed up.
