To say that the 2015 season has been rather surreal thus far is an understatement. We have seen an 11 game winning streak during April and a lot of mediocre ball since. We have seen our pitching staff been consistently dominant as our offense has been almost nonexistent. We have been no-hit once and we have been shut out too many times to count. Let’s face it this team is a sports version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
I think that at this juncture of the season it is safe to point out some obvious truths about our beloved Metsies, and here’s a list of 5 things that I think that we have learned so far.
5. Next to the Cardinals we have the most feared starting rotation in the National League – if not all of baseball.
4. Our offense is almost non-existent. Blame it on the absences of both David Wright and Travis d’Arnauld for much of the season but come on this team should be able to score more than 2 runs a game.
3. The Michael Cuddyer deal was a waste of money and draft pick. From what I have seen so far “Cuddy’s” best days are behind him and he should be more of a bench player.
2.The bullpen has been a pleasant surprise even though it can tend to be a bit erratic.
And finally at number 1: It is obvious at least to me that if David Wright does come back he will not be an everyday player ever again. I hope that I am proven wrong on this last one.
And with this said ….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
Mets alumni celebrating birthdays today include:
Mets hitting instructor from ’75-78, Phil Cavarretta would have turned 99 today (1916).
Middle reliever from ’65-’66, Gordie Richardson is 77 (1938).
Mark Carreon is 52 (1963).
First baseman/outfielder from ’94-’95, David Segui is 49 (1966).
Outfield prospect from the ’98 season, Preston Wilson is 41 (1974) . Preston ended up having a solid Major League career ( not with the Mets) , and as we all know he is the adopted son of Mets legend, Mookie Wilson.
Outfielder from the ’13 season, Rick Ankiel is 36 (1979). The sad thing is Ankiel was brought in to shore up the weak hitting outfield – He batted .182 before being released after 20 games.
Other transactions of note include:
The New York Mets purchased the contract of middle infielder, Bobby Klaus from the Cincinnati Reds on July 19, 1964.
The New York Mets traded back up outfielder, Karim Garcia to the Baltimore Orioles for middle reliever, Mike DeJean on July 19, 2004.
The New York Mets traded reserve second baseman, Jeff Keppingerto the Kansas City Royals for utility infielder, Ruben Gotay on July 19, 2006. I bet the Mets wished they could have undo that deal.
Mo Vaughn’s weight is bigger than the Mets batting average !!!
