Epiphany, Murph, rooting for laundry, new podcast etc

And I’m back…hope you enjoyed Holiday Filler and thanks to Goon and Rusty and whoever else looked out for the blog while I was away. I’m just going to jump right in and do a brain-dump rather than attempt to write at length (like usual)

Rooting For Laundry

I woke up at home this morning for the first time in two weeks and jumped into old habits. Grabbed a sweatshirt and it happened to be the Murphtober one and I got sad.

While Jerry Seinfeld has a catchy line about rooting for laundry, he is wrong. I root for the guys. I am sad that whatever the future is that it won’t include Murphy or Niese or whoever else was one of “The Mets.”

I have zero interest in seeing Neil Walker win a World Series. That was never something that concerned me. Sure if Neil Walker can win a World Series while hanging out with whoever my favorite Mets players is now, thats great, but to me Neil Walker isn’t a Met yet. Ditto whoever the new SS is (I forgot, more on that in a second).

Sometimes the laundry says Glavine on the back. Sometimes the Reds’ laundry says Seaver on the back. It’s more than rooting for a bunch of shirts Jerry.

The Epiphany

I kind of knew this about myself, but this Mets stuff is just a way to pass the time.  Always has been. In 1978 it was a way to kill the evenings in a world of 5 TV channels.  In 2016 it’s a great way to kill off commutes, and to “hang out” on my deck on a summer night.  Do I enjoy it, sure.  Do I need it, well I just found out I didn’t.

I just toured Australia for two weeks.  I think I logged into the site once, because….I was killing time at the airport in Melbourne and eventually played with Twitter and thought I’d see what Matt Harvey was up to.  Other than that, I really wasn’t on.  (Oh maybe I did Twitter at the bar one night).

I didn’t miss the site.  Didn’t miss silly twitter arguments.  Didn’t really even care Murph had signed elsewhere.  I was more interested in seeing what was around the next corner of this far-away place.

This morning, back to old habits, and firing off a blog post and checking twitter while I run a program in the background for the real-job.  I’d much rather be driving somewhere on the left side of the road.  By the way, there’s a great opportunity to sell fan apparel around the Australian Football League in Melbourne if you are so inclined and like trolleys.

Murph

Not much to add that hasn’t been said.  I am surprised he lasted in Queens as long as he did.  I hope he becomes one of the all time Mets killers.  I hope the Mets win the World Series, but re majorly tortured by Murph along the way.

Keith Hernandez

Calm down.  He is putting out a book. He’d be a fool not to be on television every night speaking with those most likely to buy his book.  It’s not torture to sit in a booth and talk about the Mets.  He has a great life. He’ll be back.  If he’s not back I’d seriously worry about the finances of your favorite real estate development company.

Queens Baseball Convention January 23rd

Keith and Dan and the gag have been hard at work putting together the 2016 Queens Baseball Convention.  Come hang out with your fellow fans, and meet Bobby Valentine, Tim Teufel, Mr. Met and Buddy Harrelson for what it annually a great day.  If you can make your way to Denver to get a t-shirt you can surely make your way to Maspeth on a Saturday afternoon on January.  See you there.

“New” Podcast Episode

And here’s another minisode of the I’d Just As Soon Kiss A Mookiee podcast I do with Jason Fry from Faith & Fear.  This one was pre-taped before the road-trip and before we had seen The Force Awakens.  If you’d like to hear us discuss TFA, that’s in Episode 27 which you will find int he playlist.  If you’d like to hear us discuss Matt Harvey, that’s in this playlist.
