Hi guys. First let’s get to the particulars.
So that sucks. Before I go on let me praise Keith @mediagoon Blacknick and Dan @dtwohig Twohig (that was silly) for all their work on this year’s QBC. I did almost nothing related to preparing this year’s now-canceled convention, and despite my bailing out on these two they continued and persevered and worked their asses off. So I know bc I’m the main guy on the blog and I tweet all the time I have gotten and will get some well meaning thank yous and sorrys, please point all your love and high-5’s to Keith and Dan.
The decision does not come lightly. I will let Keith and Dan choose to get into it as much or as little as they choose to share (and they know they can post whatever and whenever they want to about this topic), but at a top level please understand their are practical logistics that go into the day.
As an example, I saw Keith has shared on twitter that a few participants and/or moderators had told them/us (I will just say us to keep it simple) they couldn’t make it. Frustrating, understandable, surmountable.
Then lets go up a level. One of the significant guests had travel involved. Normally we don’t share this stuff because does it matter to you that Wally flew in for QBC last year? No. You just wanted to see Wally.
So play it out. Maybe it doesn’t snow where you live, but the significant guest can’t make it. What do we tell the customer who bought a ticket to see that person?
Continue to play it out. What if two can’t make it? What if two Significant Guests and a few moderators can’t make it? What about the people who planned to drive up from Southern Jersey who faced a scary forecast? What about people who don’t want to drive in potential blizzard conditions?
In the end, is the point of the day to have half an empty room staring at Jason and I talking about Star Wars?
So faced with nothing but horrible choices they took a painful one but a smart one. Now you can all plan your lives. Now you can stay safe.
Murphy’s Walker’s Law suggests now it will wind up being 85 and sunny on Saturday because the universe is mean and hates us. People might think we (they, us, whatever this is) panicked for nothing. They might think we’re silly. They might be disappointed. But everyone gets their money back and nobody gets stranded in a blizzard.
The spirit of this was always to get the fans together to support a team we love, to gather as a family, and to have a nice day. The Weather Gods don’t want us to do that this weekend. Keith and Dan are trying to figure out some other way for us to get together.
Thanks to everyone who had planned to be part of the day from the Big Guests to the panel hosts to the panelists and especially to those of you who bought tickets to support the event.
We’ll update as warranted, but Saturday’s QBC is PPD
