100 Random Cool Mets Things #32: Kiner’s Korner

kiners korner

Another cool thing from an era gone by, the sort of thing that would never matter now.  But in a world of limited sports coverage, Kiners Korner was a wonderful low budget weird exploration into getting to see players, not just Mets players, but opposing players, on TV outside of the game.

Basically the post-game show would be Ralph talking to whoever they could grab.  Sometimes it would be a legitimate star, sometimes it would be a random dude from the hallway.  Now add on top that Ralph wasn’t exactly Johnny Carson  Jon Stewart, it was wonderfully awkward cool television.

I know Ralph became Saint Ralph the longer he stayed on TV, but there was a time there when (as a kid) you’d wonder who the hell this guy was.  Why was he on TV?  Then you’d look at his career stats and realize that this guy was a really good player.  Then as you got older you saw his dating resume, and yeah this guy is HOF quality.
