Friends, the Golden Age of Mets Blogging has ended.
I picked 2006 because 2006-2016 seems like a round number of ten years. I guess we could pick 2003 when Matt Cerrone started Mets Blog, and we could pick this morning when we found out Adam Rubin is hanging it up….but let’s go with 2006-2016 since 2006 is a year that resonates with Mets fans.
Somewhere in that period we had Cerrone….the guys at Faith & Fear teamed up…..my dopey site started in 2008…..all the Amazing Rising Apple Insider Blogs came along around then (relax Amazing Insider, I didn’t fact check your start date, sorry if you have been around since 1991)……some other sites came and went (some good ones too, I miss Kerel Cooper and Baron and whatshisface at Read The Apple)… then for a few years everyone had a Mets blog and the Mets were having bloggers over for dinner……and now POOF.
ICYMI Cerrone is still Mets Blogging but is moving on to also do other things and Adam Rubin announced he’s leaving the beat to take a job in PR.
Concurrently, as just about anyone with a website can tell you, traffic is harder and harder to come by. Ask yourself, did you come to this article because you typed in MetsPolice.com, or did the article come to you via twitter or maybe Facebook? Probably the latter (which is one of the reasons you see me repeatedly tweeting the same links. Sorry, but it’s that or die.)
I’ll be curious to see how, if, and at what level ESPN New York values the Rubin position, or if it is something they decide they can live without. (Presumably ESPN would still cover a good Mets game)
Then there is the need for blogs at all – the Mets have their own social media and can easily communicate with fans when Fireworks Night is. Has the age of “Game Previews” ended? Do we need this? (sorry Amazing Insider blogs)
And…let’s be real here….a lot of sites were reading Adam’s tweets and then spinning it into articles.
Now for me, from Mets Police HQ out here in High Horse NJ, I’m fine. Sure, news will get to me a little slower than it did last year, but it will still get to me somehow. I can still search twitter for David Wright and Matt Harvey like I do every day, and I can still poke around the MLB Shop and people will still send me things….so MP can sail along….but today is a sad day as we watch the Golden Age of Blogs die.
Adam – you were the best at this. Didn’t love the twitter spoilers in the 9th innings, but man you were the best. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors.
On to…..the Silver Age of Blogging!
