The 1990 Mets aren’t discussed much….Davey was dismissed after 44 games at 20-22, and at the time I don’t think the fans bugged too much. It was a different time, pre-social media, and we were fed The Narrative that the team was out of control.
So in comes Buddy who does a fine job in Year One, but would wind up destroying his prestige among the fans (half of you have no idea who he is, and at one point he was the #2 All Time Mets Hero).
Darryl hadn’t left yet, Doc won 19 games which didn’t seem all that impressive because he was no longer as amazing as he had once been and Keith Miller was in the lineup, earning that flag of his outside Citi Field.
Look at all that pitching on the cover! You can never go wrong with 5 Aces, right? The revised cover had Buddy Harrelson.
Frank Viola won 20, David Cone won 14…but the Mets were 4 out because the Pirates had these kids Bonds and Bonilla.
The Dynasty was over, we just didn’t know it….
