TAKE DAVID OUT ON DEFENSE SO HE CAN GET A WALK OFF.
I was at the final game at Yankee Stadium II and with one out in the 9th they took Jeter out. That allowed him to walk off and get a nice ovation from the crowd.
What you don’t want to do, and I fear you will do it because you’re the Mets, is have us all find out David’s career ended 5 minutes ago because suddenly Todd Frazier is at 3B or The Virus is pinch hitting.
Here’s what you do – whether it’s the first inning, 5th inning, or the top of the 9th, when there is one out you call time. David takes a nice walk from third to the home dugout. We all wave, cheer, clap, CRY – David waves to the crowd and goes in the dugout. We cry some more. Then Frazier takes over at third.
Again, what you DO NOT WANT TO DO is have Cosell say “pinch hitting for the Mets, Number 72 Jack Reinheimer. But you’re the Mets and I kind of think you will fuck this up so I am here to help (remember Shea Goodbye anyone? Yeah the Mets will fuck this up).
Also remember to do this with ONE out as random things can happen with two outs. Also by ONE out I am assuming there are not runners on 1st and second with no out – because then you risk the chance of that idiot Virus turning an unassisted triple play and ruining everything. If you need me to serve as bench coach for the day I am happy to help and will donate my salary to David’s charity. Send the contract over.
Am I being clear enough? You take him out on Defense. You do not pinch hit for him. You do not have him disappear into the night between innings. You don’t even pinch RUN for him as we don’t want to see him walk 10 feet to the dugout.
ON DEFENSE Mets – are you listening – ON DEFENSE and give David the walk off he deserves.
