As the calendar flips to 2019 and the 50th Anniversary celebration of our 1969 heroes, it’s scary to think how we could be one of those fanbases that makes Bad Lists of teams that haven’t won in forevers.
Yes I know the game was tied when Buckner happened…I used it as shorthand to get you over here.
But imagine if the Mets had lost that game? Would 1986 have faded in the background a bit the way 2000 has and the way 2015 already has? Would 1986 be our personal torture?
Had the Mets now won, the list would be
- Cleveland 1948
- Rangers – never – 58 seasons
- Mets – 50 seasons, tied with three teams that started play in 1969 (Pilots, Expos, Padres).
Yikes!
Fortunately The Dynasty did squeak out one parade for us, or the 50 years thing would be pretty scary.
It should be a fun summer, and in some ways a sad summer, as we celebrate the 69ers for likely one last time.
