TO A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT
FLUSHING, N.Y., March 7, 2019 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed two-time All-Star outfielder Carlos Gómez to a minor league contract and invited him to major league Spring Training.
Gómez, 33, who made his major league debut in 2007 with the Mets, was an All-Star in 2013 and 2014 with Milwaukee. He was a 2012 and 2013 National League Wilson Defensive Player of the Year in the outfield and earned a Rawlings Gold Glove in 2013.
“Carlos adds additional depth to our outfield,” Mets Executive Vice President and General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. “He’s an all-around player who can help offensively, defensively and on the base paths.”
The 6-3, 220-pounder has 264 stolen bases, which ranks ninth among active players. He has had double-digit homers and stolen bases in the same season six times, including a career-high in homers (24) and stolen bases (40) in 2013.
Gómez has slashed .253/.313/.412 with 233 doubles, 41 triples, 142 homers and 665 runs scored over 1,427 major league games during his 12-year career with the Mets, Twins, Brewers, Astros, Rangers and Rays.
Gómez was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2002. He was traded to Minnesota along with RHPs Deolis Guerra, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey for LHP Johan Santana on February 2, 2008.
