This is weird. A Sports League played a championship game that did not spill into prime time on the West Coast Fan (where all the sports fans who watch network TV must live, as opposed to the general population which lives in the Eastern Time Zone)…and that game did really well in the ratings!
The Blues beat the Bruins 4-1 to win the NHL’s 17th Stanley Cup Final Game 7, and NBC attracted a record audience. The 6.2 overnight rating for the game is not only a record for NBC, it’s a record for any NHL game on any network (including Fox, ABC, and ESPN) since overnight ratings began to be tracked in 1994. The previous record for an overnight game in 2010, for the Blackhawks’ Game 6 Stanley Cup Final triumph over the Flyers (which drew a 5.84 overnight). (via Awful Announcing.)
How is that possible? West Coast sports fans can’t watch sports in late afternoons. Except for the Football Championship. I mean the NBA is even waiting until after 6pm Pacific to play their game tonight – that was Casual East Coast Fans can fall asleep and not be bothered seeing the end of the game.
This hockey league must be on to something. COULD sports fans on the West Coast actually be able to watch sports as the same time as the large portion of the US population who live in Eastern? Could this be possible?
