Baseball Hall of Immortals – Inductee #70: Al Kaline

The man known as Mr. Tiger is our 70th inductee into the Baseball Hall of Immortals.

Al Kaline started his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1953 when he was just 18 years old, going straight from high school to the major leagues.  Over the next 22 years Kaline would establish himself as not only as the leader of the Tigers, but as one of their altime best players.

In just his third year, at the age of 20 years old, Kaline became the youngest player to ever lead the league in batitng, hitting .340 with 200 hits (also leading the league).  While that was the only time Kaline would lead the league in batting, he would hit over .300 eight more times.  He would also hit 20 or more honmeruns 9 times.

While consistent at the plate, Kaline was also an excellent fielder, winning 10 gold gloves in right field.

In his final year in 1974, at the age of 39, Kaline would accumulate 146 hits, the most he had hit in 10 seasons.  It would push him past the 3,000 hit mark.  He would end his career withg a .297 batting average and 399 homeruns. 

The geatest rightfielder in Tigers history, Al Kaline is an Immortal.
