My friends the Mets shared some information about tonight’s starter David Peterson….
ROSTER MOVES: The Mets have selected the contract of LHP David Peterson from the team’s Alternate Training Site…He will be making his major league debut…In a corresponding move, RHP Tyler Bashlor has been designated for assignment.
FIRST ROUND’S ON ME: With David Peterson’s addition to the roster today, the Mets now have four of their first-round selections on their active roster… Peterson (20th overall pick in 2017) joins Michael Conforto (10th overall, 2014), Dominic Smith (11th overall, 2013) and Brandon Nimmo (13th overall, 2011) as Mets first-rounders on the active roster…The last pitcher whom the Mets drafted in the first round to make his major league debut with the club was Matt Harvey (2010 seventh overall pick, debuted in 2012).
BOSTON CONNECTION: Before he was in the Mets organization, Peterson was initially drafted by the Red Sox in the 28th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft…Peterson did not sign with Boston.
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Peterson, the Mets’ first-round selection in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, is set to make his major league debut tonight… The last Mets pitcher to make his major league debut in a start was Drew Gagnon on July 10, 2018 vs. Philadelphia…The last Mets starting pitcher to earn the win in his major league debut was Steven Matz, who defeated the Reds on June 28, 2015 at Citi Field.
…
In other news, the Mets need to calm down with this note.
HOW SWEEP IT IS: The Mets are looking for their first sweep of the season tonight…The team record 10 sweeps last season, including three on the road…The Mets have never swept the Red Sox (10th regular-season series between the two clubs).
Stop. You sound ridiculous Mets.
And here’s an interesting note.
Alonso has gone deep in 50 of his first 165 games, the most games with a home run through 165 career appearances in major league history…Only one player has hit more home runs through 165 career games (Rudy York, 55).
Rudy York gang.
And here’s some stuff I accidentally pasted and don’t feel like deleting.
THREE’S COMPANY: Dominic Smith socked his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning last night…Both of Smith’s last two hits have been three-run homers…The Californian ended the 2019 season with an extra-inning three-run shot at home against the Braves.
CONFORTOBLY NUMB: Michael Conforto has safely reached base in all four games of the season…He is 5-12 with two runs, a double, a home run, two RBI a walk and was hit by a pitch…His .417 batting average is tied for third in the National League and is tied for 12th in the majors.
I LIKE MIKE: Conforto has hit 110 home runs in his career which is 12th on the Mets all-time list…Ed Kranepool is 11th with 118 followed by Edgardo Alfonso who is 10th with 120…Conforto belted 33 homers last season, setting a career-high…Conforto previously set it with 28 in 2018…Conforto is one of five players in team history with 30 or more home runs, 90 or more RBI and 80 or more walks in a single season…Also David Wright (2008, 2007), Carlos Beltrán (2006), Darryl Strawberry (1988, 1987) and Howard Johnson (1987).
ROADSARIO: Amed Rosario went 2-5 with a run last night…He ranked eighth in the majors and fourth in the NL with a .323 road batting average last year… He placed second in the majors with 104 hits on the road and tied for first with six triples in away games…He batted .382 (52-136) with 24 runs, nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 17 RBI, five walks, six steals, a .408 OBP, a .566 SLG and a .975 OPS in 32 games on the road in the second-half…Overall, he finished with a .323/.352/.484 slash line with 32 extra-base hits and 41 RBI in 79 road games in 2019.
LUGOOS: Seth Lugo converted his 10th career save and his first of the season yesterday…He has hurled 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only a hit, while strikeout out four…Lugo is tied for eighth in the majors with five saves of four more outs since 2019…Lugo struck out a career-high 104 in 80.0 innings last season, which placed third in the NL and sixth in the majors in strikeouts as a reliever…He also ranked fourth in the NL among relievers in innings pitched, had the fifth-lowest WHIP (0.90) in the NL among relievers and tied for sixth in the NL in wins.
BUFFALO SOLDIER: Wilson Ramos went 2-4 with a run and a double yesterday…Ramos safely reached base in 28-straight games from August 3-September 6…He hit .407 (44-108) with 10 runs, seven doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI, four walks, a steal, a .434 OBP, a .556 SLG and a .989 OPS in the span…He finished the year second in MLB among catchers with 68 RBI and ranked fifth with a .349 OBP…His 26-game batting streak was the longest ever by a Venezuelan-born player.
SIXTY-GAME SPRINT: Over the final 60 games of the 2019 season, the Mets’ 39-21 mark tied for the second-best in the majors and co-led the NL… Only one team, the Astros (42-18), had a better record in the season’s last 60 games…The Rays, Twins, Dodgers and A’s all also ended last year on a 39- 21 run…See the chart below for the Mets’ best 60-game starts to a season:
