Ten years ago I attended Opening Day for like the 30th out of 33 years, only occasionally missing because I had a new job and couldn’t get the day off. (The best OD of all time was April 5, 1983).
In 2016, after the World Series run, the Mets jacked prices because they had all their new World Series friends, so I stayed home. I have stayed home since.
A decade later, we find ourselves in a similar place. The third place Mets had their run thanks to expanded playoffs and Pete Alonso getting jammed and the ball going to the only place in the park it would have gone out. The Mets PR machine has sold everyone on Soto…to the point I think Keith Hernandez and I are the only people who realize this team has no pitching….so the Mets are telling us that season tickets (I am not using their new term) are sold out.
These are someone else’s Mets. Lee Mazzilli turned 70 the other day. There are the Lindor Mets, fans who are ok with a vulgarized LGM, a team back to wearing bad uniforms, and an owner really trying to build a casino on parkland. I find myself not interested in any of it.
I no longer have “cable.” Elon killed Twitter and with it the Twitter Hang.
The past two seasons I decided that it wasn’t worth spending all that time listening to Gary, so I stopped. I didn’t watch a game last season until Game 161.
I think I will “find a way” to see today’s game but its not like ten years ago when I was very much into the Mets.
From the start, this blog has been about the Mets reaping what the sow. Somewhere along the way, they moved on without me, and I have moved on without them. I hope for the Lindor Generation you get to enjoy things as much as I did from 1977 until the pandemic. Here in the 2020’s, I just don’t care any more.
My goal remains to keep blogging until the Mets win the World Series while nicely dressed. Unfortunately Steve & Alex have gone out of their way to make sure the team is not nicely dressed, so you have at least two more seasons of me.
Let’s Go Mets, but let’s do it with Lindor going 0 for 5 every day.
