My friends the Mets sent me some notes for the game which you aren’t going to actually watch since it is nice out and tomorrow is the beginning of “might as well be winter” until May 1st. You’ll have plenty of time to sit in front of the TV, but not today.
LABOR DAY: The Mets are 28-35-1 all-time on Labor Day which is weird because there are no ties in baseball.
Yesterday, Pete Alonso recorded his sixth career multi-homer game and his second of the season…He has four homers in his last four games… Alonso became hit his 10th home run in his 39th game this year…He hit his 10th home runs in is 33rd game last season…He played his 200th career game yesterday…No player has hit more home runs in his first 200 career games than Alonso’s 63…Aaron Judge had 61… Alonso is batting .271/.346/.543 with nine runs, four doubles, five home runes, 12 RBI and five walks in 19 games at Citi Field this year…Alonso has hit 32 home runs at Citi Field…That places him eighth on the all-time list.
Pete has been red hot since Lyin’ Todd Frazier returned and started lending Pete his bats. That’s weird. Especially because Pete was “good” last year when Lyin’ Todd was around. Weird, right? Maybe the bats have some sort of magic power that stops making you swing at pitches that are low, outside, and out of the strike zone. Maybe Pete just needed someone to remind him of the Salt and the Pepper. Regardless, Lyin’ Todd probably gets signed for 2021 just to keep Vulgar Pete company.
And yet, despite Todd’s Magic Bats, Pete Alonso | INF | .224, 10 HR, 25 RBI, 0 SB which admittedly looks less horrific than it did two home runs ago. I still maintain he’d be getting booed out of the park – and fans would not have been happy with .224 30 and 75 in a full season.
TOTAL DOM-INATION: Dominic Smith recorded a career-high four hits and tied a club record with three doubles (30th time in Mets history) yesterday…Has 21 extra-base hits (15 doubles, six homers) in his last 27 games…He is leading the majors with 15 doubles... Overall he is batting .327/.397/.646 with 18 runs, 15 doubles, seven home runs, 31 RBI, 12 walks and a 1.043 OPS...He is tied for fifth in the NL and tied for ninth in MLB in RBI, tied for fourth in the NL and tied for sixth in the majors in extra-base hits. Now if you told Mets fans that Dom hit .327 with 21 HRs and 93 RBI in a full season, I bet they’d be pleased. You millennials are still doing that OPS thing right?
Zack Wheeler makes his second start against the Mets this season…He earned the win on August 16 in Philadelphia, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts…Overall, Wheeler has made 60 career starts at Citi Field and is 19-23 with a 4.15 ERA (166 earned runs/359.2 innings) with 131 walks and 359 strikeouts…This includes a 6-3 record with a 3.92 ERA (43 earned runs/98.2 innings) with 25 walks and 104 strikeouts in 15 starts at Citi Field last season.
