Baseball still is best when it’s consumed live, but try telling that to Mets fans who’ve just seen the bullpen blow another late-inning lead. Or see the Phillies swoop in and take two of three. Or hear Wilpon trash his own team. Or keep waiting for Gary Carter’s number to be retired.
These are all factors that contribute to a devaluation of a once-great franchise. It already feels like a million years ago when the Mets drew four million fans in 2008. Almost half of that armada is gone, and as the Wilpons are learning, it won’t be easy to get them back.
