In Newsday, Ken Davidoff tells us the Rays were interested in Jose back in June when he was totally rocking and hadn’t been on the DL.
The Mets told Tampa Bay thanks but no thanks, that they wanted to keep Reyes for the long term and weren’t inclined to trade their ultra-popular leadoff man.
Can the Rays borrow him for the last 4 games?…..
There’s a large group of fans who insist that keeping Reyes as part of the “heart” of the team is more important than setting the team up for more long term success.
I wonder if that group will respond differently to Reyes leaving via free agency than they would have to a Reyes trade…
The Mets simply couldn’t have traded Reyes then. If they had, attendance would have gone to absolute crap by late August and the stadium would be a ghost town by Septem–Oh, wait. Nevermind.

But, hey, stuff happens. No one could’ve possibly seen it coming all the way back in Ju–Oh, wait. Nevermind.
