MIAMI — Jose Reyes needs to pick up a phone and call Hanley Ramirez.
Or, at least, send him a text.
Do something, anything, to start a conversation that so desperately needs starting. The longer Reyes waits to get in touch with Ramirez, the greater the risk to the Marlins that an already-uncomfortable situation becomes a whole bunch worse.
It absolutely should be up to Reyes, a Marlins free-agent newcomer displacing Ramirez at shortstop, to make the initial contact. It’d be a gesture of goodwill, if nothing else. The club certainly shouldn’t have to back-channel things.

“He wants to win, and I want to win, too,” Reyes said while seated on an outdoor balcony across the street from where the Marlins’ new, retractable-roof ballpark in Little Havana is nearing completion. “I don’t have any concern at all.”
Well, of course, he doesn’t.
Reyes is making more money (six years, $106 million) than Ramirez and doesn’t have to change positions.
“I’m very excited to play with him,” Reyes said. “He’s one of the best players. I’m looking forward to getting to spring training. I’ve known Hanley a long time.”
Shouldn’t that kind of familiarity make breaking the ice on what might be an awkward conversation a bit easier?
