If you analyze it, that set had a longer run than any look in Mets history. The original homes added front numbers in 1965, logo patch in 1966, then ran unchanged from 1966-1977. These ran from 1998-2011. What looked to be a way to capitalize on the fad of black uniforms at the time, as well as the MIB movie which they tried to evoke with their marketing, became the “Thing That Wouldn’t Leave.” The Mets were selling more jerseys…but perhaps that was because the team got Piazza, made the playoffs in 1999 and the WS in 2000. Anyway, sanity has returned thanks to this site and Supreme Commander Lukas.
See what Franco’s wearing in the middle of the top pic? I didn’t mind that look or its initial purpose: alternate jersey & cap on Sundays. Stop there, and I’m cool with it all. But, no, they had to drop-shadow the other jerseys and starting wearing the cap every damned day. Then they rolled out black socks and sleeves with the roads and homes. Then they added a 3rd cap. The whole thing deteriorated into clown fest.
And I still want to know who overruled the blue eyelets on the hybrid mid-stream.
