  1. Gambling has always been the third rail for baseball, a throwback to the 1918 scandal. Baseball always been forgiving for players with alcohol and drug problems, but I have to agree with you about steroids. I have a friend who was drafted by the Giants and in essence was a career minor leaguer (reminded me of Bull Durham). His minor league season was over and he was a substitute teaching at my high school. While in school, he got a call to join the big club for the last week of the season.
When I think of cheating players on steroids, I think of all the minor leaguers who were clean who never got a chance to fulfill their dreams because their spot was taken by a cheater.
