Klapisch: Fundraiser aimed at helping Mets employee with cancer – NorthJersey.com

For those of you who think the blogosphere has been co-opted by steak sandwiches (half-sandwiches) and Jeff Wilpon’s mind powers…here’s some excerpts from a must read for you.

More importantly, the support has changed Shannon’s outlook, and if you don’t believe it dial the Mets’ offices. She’s there, she picks up the phone, she’s still working. And just to make the point. Shannon wears a T-shirt that calls out her opponent: “Cancer, you picked the wrong woman.”

Soon after learning of her cancer, Jeff Wilpon reached out to Robert Garrett, the president of Hackensack University Medical Center, using Don and Deirdre Imus as the intermediary.

Shannon didn’t know it at the time, but Wilpon’s effort saved her life. Instead of undergoing an immediate radical mastectomy, which would’ve been the standard response, the sophisticated positron emission tomography (PET) scan was able to locate the additional tumors in Shannon’s spine.
