While the Yankees were one of five teams in 1973 to draft a player in the first round who never made the majors, only the first pick by the Mets made an impact among 36 rounds of selections; the Mets’ draft still had a silver lining—kind of. Lee Mazzilli, Brooklyn’s own, was taken in the first round (14th pick) before the Mets went 0-for-35 the rest of the draft in terms of players who lasted at Shea Stadium longer than a few months.
