Forget the money, forget the innings, start Syndergaard in the majors

Before I start ranting, a tid-bit from the WSJ

So forget Syndergaard’s total minor-league résumé comparing quite well to Gooden’s. The key number is his 117.2 innings in 2013, 73.1 less than Gooden in the minor-league season before his breakout.

So yes the emotional response is to protect those young arms.  Yep, we wouldn’t want to lose someone like a year…like say happened to Matt Harvey.  You may recall Matt Harvey.  He was a young stud and there was talk of protecting his arm.  And now he is out for the year.

I’ve come full circle on this.  Guys like Tom Seaver were able to throw all day every day and somehow lived.  Even with school kids, in the 70s and 80s you could throw 400 stickball pitches and come back the next day.  When I coached Little League back before the rules came in kids would sail past 100 pitches three times a week.  They lived.  I had two kids who played college ball.

So I don’t want to hear about the arm protection because Matt got hurt anyway.  Let’s play baseball.

Then there is the money.  You know and I know and Fred, Jeff, Saul and Bill Maher know that this is about saving money on a contract down the road.  I don’t care about 2020 or 2021 or whenever it is that they would have to pay Syndergaard more.

I want him on the team.

Mets fans have been told for several years now that the future was coming.  Just let us get past this Madoff stuff.  Just let us get past whatever we want to blame Omar for.  Just let us get past the Bay and Santana contracts.  Just let us get past the debt refinancing.

It is time to play baseball.  Real baseball.  90 win baseball, right Fred?

As I mentioned yesterday (on twitter @metspolice) my favorite Mets season of them all was 1984.  The Mets had sucked for 6 years and I was expecting nothing yet again.  (Sound familiar).  The only question was if the Mets would finish last or would the Cubs.

The Mets brought up a 19 year old named Dwight Gooden and went on one of the most exciting pennant chases (vs. the Cubs of all teams) you’ll ever remember.  Then 1985 was even more fun and 1986 you know about.  But 1984 was so so exciting.  The Mets didn’t suck!  Shea was alive!

Remember the buzz of Harvey Day?  Let’s have Thor Day or whatever stupid marketing gets applied to it.  Regardless, let’s have the sizzle.

This is SHOW BUSINESS Mets.  Put some fannies in the seats.  Put some eyeballs on SNY.  Dice-K Day isn’t going to do that.

Don’t worry if this costs you a few bucks next decade.   Tomorrow never comes.  Harvey Day isn’t coming at all this year.

You jumped halfway in the pool with Granderson and Colon….let’s get wet….start your best 5 pitchers.

Time to get serious.  Excuses are over.  Put Syndergaard on the team.
