METS ACQUIRE KELLY JOHNSON FROM ATLANTA
FLUSHING, N.Y., June 8, 2016 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has acquired infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson and cash from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for righthanded pitcher Akeel Morris.
Johnson, 34, was batting .215 (26-121) with six doubles, one home run and 10 RBI in 49 games for the Braves this season. He made 23 starts at second base, four in leftfield and one at first base in his first season back with the Braves after signing there in the offseason. It was Johnson’s third stint in the Braves organization.
Last season, Johnson hit .250 (32-128) with six doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI in 49 games for the Mets after he was acquired from Atlanta on July 24. Johnson batted .265 (82-310) with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 47 RBI in 111 games combined between the Braves and Mets last year.
Johnson was on the postseason roster for each of the Mets’ playoff series in 2015 and batted a combined .111 (1-9) in nine playoff games.
In 11 major league seasons, Johnson has batted .250 (1,091-4,360) with 222 doubles, 40 triples, 146 home runs and 526 RBI in 1,317 career games for the Braves, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, Rays, Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles and Mets. Over his career, Johnson has batted .271 (304-1,121) vs. lefthanded pitching.
Johnson was originally drafted by the Braves in the compensation round (38th overall pick) of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft.
Morris, 23, was 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA (13 earned runs/25.1 innings) and six saves for Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League this season. Morris appeared in one game for the Mets in 2015, working 0.2 innings on June 17 at Toronto.
