100 Random Cool Mets Things #5: Lee Mazzilli homers in the 1979 All Star Game

Welcome to 100 Random Cool Mets Things. In this series, we kill off the off-season by me randomly bringing something up.

You kids can now relate, thanks to Terry Collins, what it’s like to stay up past eleven and see no Mets in the All Star Game.  When I was young we were lucky to have ONE Met in the ASG, and he’d always get in as a sub.  In 1979 it was Lee Mazzilli’s turn to represent, and he hit a clutch home run and then got a big walk in late innings.  For this young Lee Mazzilli fan, what a thrill.

I know you guys don’t get Lee, but if you were born into the late 70’s Mets imagine some combination of Wright, Harvey, Piazza, Travolta, Cespedes and The Fonz wrapped up in a guy with Murphy’s stats.  Super-star without being a super-star.  If you’re of a certain age, and that age is late 40’s now, Lee was your guy.
