Jason and I have already recorded next week’s podcast (I will probably post it on Wednesday) and we started talking about Buddy Harrelson.
There was a time where if you listed the iconic Mets that the list went Seaver, Harrelson. And that was still the list into the mid 80’s.
Buddy has fallen way down the list, both as a factor of time (HOFers like Mike Piazza came along) and the damage his managerial career did in Queens. He was never loved the same way after that, so the next time you want David Wright or someone to manage the team, remember that cautionary tale.
Buddy was a light hitter, but played 13 seasons in Queens which not too many have done. Teammates loved him, fans loved him.
It’s a shame he isn’t around Queens more than he is, but like I said, that managerial stint really did some damage for a guy that managed at a .529 clip.
