SLACKISH REACTION: It’s all about Tom, right? For something I have “known” for a few years hearing the confirmation is really hard. As I mentioned last night, it sucks that the Shamsky book appears to have forced the issue, although I think the calendar would have forced it when/if Tom didn’t show up for the 1969 stuff. The statue brigade is out, and the newspaper instead of talking to the people who have been on the case for years (and I don’t mean me) found a 19 year old…however I appreciate you Mr. 19 year old even if newspapers pay no attention to details.
Over the years I wrote about David Wright’s contract and how it was about so much more than the third base part. David now takes over as The Face of the Franchise. It won’t be Mike Piazza who neither wants it nor is he the right person. The right person is David Wright, and today that role falls to him for hopefully a very very long time.
Seaver hasn’t really been around if you think about it. Not early since the 2013 All Star Game.
I think about his appearance (in 2012) when they announced the 50th Anniversary team at the 92nd Sweet Y. That was when I first noticed Tom’s stories weren’t as sharp as they had been, and that’s when the back-chatter started. Ed Charles said, and I can’t remember if he said it to me on the side, or if he said it on mike (and I think it was the latter) that Tom wasn’t doing well – and that was back at the first Queens Baseball Convention. So the news had been around….but kept quiet….until Shamsky started promoting a book.
As I also mentioned yesterday, it is interesting to me that the Seavers released the news via the Hall of Fame and not the Mets.
You blog long enough there are bound to be some bad days in Metstropolis. All you can do is keep moving on. Normalcy, the best you can. And that’s what I will do here…

Noah Syndergaard really enjoyed the Captain Marvel movie.
I still don’t get the Jessica Mendoza move, well beside the CAA part. You know who also has a high baseball IQ and has won at a high level and is a baseball announcer who sees a lot of baseball? Keith Hernandez
Oh yeah, the Mets signed Carlos Gomez. A legit ML outfielder who isn’t repped by CAA. I like this move a lot. It’s not about starting Gomez, it’s about the OF depth over the course of six months. Good pickup.
My working theory on Al Leiter is that it is somehow tied to MLB’s interest in getting a cut of sports gambling.
