You will attend the 50th Anniversary of the New York Mets conference

Hofstra University’s Cultural Center presents the 50th Anniversary of the New York Mets conference. It will delve into and dissect myriad aspects of the New York Mets experience at this milestone moment in our team’s history. Many of those doing the delving and dissecting have a vested interest in the Mets.

Because they’re Mets fans.

There are former Mets players, veteran Mets media members, academicians with a Mets bent, those who have studied and written about the Mets all contributing…but what makes this the event you’re definitely going to want to attend part or all of is the Mets fan influence. Because of us, this conference will be, in large part, the Mets as understood by people like you; the Mets as they matter most.

Our Mets.

So please come out. I’ve been talking this thing up since last fall, since I was asked to step in and play a small role in planning and organizing the conference’s content following the death of Dana Brand, the Hofstra professor, Mets blogger and Mets fan who saw our team and envisioned it as worthy of a serious and loving in-depth treatment. That’s what we’re going to give the Mets next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 26 to 28 in Hempstead.

You gotta join us — if not for all three days, then for at least one. At least a morning or an afternoon or an evening.

I’ll be there. Jason’ll be there. You know we’re Mets fans. Mets fans from Mets By The Numbers, Amazin’ Avenue, Eddie Kranepool Society, Gal For All Seasons, MetSilverman, Mets Police, Metstradamus, Optimistic Mets Fan, On The Black, Metphistopheles, Ron Kaplan’s Baseball Bookshelf, New York Baseball History Examiner, Mets Poet, LoHud Mets Blog and ESPN New York will be there, too.

And that’s just the bloggers. There will be Mets fans who collect stuff and Mets fans who notice stuff and Mets fans who don’t normally publicly express themselves yet have a lot to say. This is a forum for Mets fans like that. Like you. C’mon and listen. C’mon and exchange ideas. C’mon and celebrate our Mets in a place where for three days, nothing will be more important than the Mets.

Find out more here and register here. I look forward to seeing you there.

Yes I lifted 95% of Greg’s article.  Yes I have done that before.  He has yet to beat me up and I only do it for stuff that i think is super important…and he’s just so much better with words.

I will be there Saturday the 28th for sure, and I am trying to arrange “client meetings” on the other days but I think I will fail at that.  See you there.

Food Drive Fridays: Mets announce season-long hunger relief initiative

I know it’s an Olympic Sport to be negative about the Mets, especially if you have a press pass, but I think they do a lot of this sort of thing that goes unheralded and I am always happy to pass along the Mets’ community efforts.

We all “waste money” on jerseys and $8 beers…if you’re heading out to Citi tonight drop off some food.  You know R.A. Dickey would.  And if you’re on the way up to the press box…drop off a can.

FLUSHING, N.Y., April 19, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced the launch of “Feeding the Big Apple” presented by The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:  HAIN), a season-long hunger relief initiative that starts tomorrow, Friday, April 20 with the first of 12 Food Drive Fridays at Citi Field.  Throughout the season, Mets players will participate in the activities of long-time Mets partners City Harvest, Citymeals-on-Wheels, Island Harvest, Rock and Wrap It Up!, and a public service announcement raising awareness of hunger-related issues that will air at the ballpark and on SNY.

Fans can drop off canned or dry food donations at every Friday home game at the City Harvest or Island Harvest truck next to the Shea Home Run Apple on Mets Plaza in front of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.  Visit Mets.com/FeedingBigApple for more information about Food Drive Fridays and what fans can do to help.

As more people are affected by the challenging economy in New York, the need for emergency food has increased dramatically.  Soup kitchens and food pantries served by City Harvest have seen an average increase in demand of 25% since 2008, and visits by children are up 35%.  A sustained, high need for food has become the new normal for many New Yorkers.

“With thousands of New Yorkers going hungry every day we thought it was critical to find a way to help and bring attention to this growing problem,” said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, Mets.  “Our partners at Hain Celestial share our commitment for helping our community, and together with our fans and the leading hunger-relief organizations in New York, we’ll help feed the Big Apple.”

“As part of our ongoing commitment to provide ‘A Healthy Way of Life™’ by promoting healthy families, a healthy community and a healthy environment, we are excited to extend our partnership and work with the Mets on this important hunger relief initiative,” said Irwin D. Simon, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hain Celestial.  “We are pleased to launch the Feeding the Big Apple effort with our leading natural and organic brands product donations to each of the Food Drive Fridays and to showcase our Sensible Portions® Veggie Straws, Terra® Chips and Yves Veggie Cuisine® brands with product offerings at concession stands throughout Citi Field.”

The Mets will support the initiative with 15- and 30-second PSAs with their players encouraging fans to donate food on Food Drive Fridays and help strike out hunger.  The spot will air on Citi Vision at Citi Field and on SNY during Mets games.

For the past six years after every game at Citi Field, volunteers from Rock and Wrap It Up! have collected food for delivery to area food kitchens to help feed the hungry.  The Mets and City Harvest have worked together along with Citi to repack apples and potatoes during several events for distribution to community food programs and serving thousands of hungry families.  The Mets have supported Citymeals-on-Wheels with alumni helping to deliver meals to homebound elderly.

On Monday, April 23 at Citi Field, Island Harvest will host their ninth annual fundraiser with the Mets. Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, which distributes surplus food to 500 community food programs, has raised more than $200,000 though the ballpark fundraisers.

“Feeding the Big Apple” Presented by Hain Celestial is part of the TeamMets community volunteerism initiative that uses the interest in the Mets and their players to encourage fans to join the team in helping others.  To spread the word, the Mets produced a series of PSAs promoting NYC Service, Mayor Bloomberg’s volunteer initiative which positions New York City as the easier place in the world to volunteer.

This Mets room is awesome

Shannon,
We moved into the house in 2008 when The Boy was 13. I asked if he’d like a Mets room and this is what we came up with! The bunting, framed Daily News 2000 WS cover and 10 Greatest Moments framed poster, come from my collection, We added the painted chair rails and some posters, light switch cover, and night light etc, as per his doing. He’s 17 now and still loves it, although when college hits I’ve got a feeling we might have to tone it down…
