Fake Darryl Strawberry and the fake Mets of Moneyball

Some uniform nerdery and some quality Matt Cerrone linkbait!  Matt loves the racing stripes.

Here’s Billy Beane as portrayed in Moneyball in a 1984 Mets jersey.  Billy wore #35 from 9/10/85 until 10/6/85 according to the great MBTN.

You can click on these for nice pretty big versions.

Now here’s something for you. The scene in the movie shows the Mets playing at the Dodgers. The Mets did play the Dodgers on Sep 6-8, which does not reconcile with MBTN…and also the boxscores for those games don’t list Beane.

Beane first appears in the September 13th boxscore (game 1 of a doubleheader, ran for Clint Hurdle.)

But let’s take a closer look at the schedule. On 9/13 the Mets were in Montreal. I don’t know what shape that stadium is in, but perhaps it was challenging to make it look like an MLB Stadium. On 9/10 they were at Shea and that’s gone. So why not fudge and put him in Dodger Stadium where it presumably was easy to go film or go film some stuff to CGI in later?

Anyways, here’s Fake Darryl Strawberry

And if you zoom in on this one I guess we can also see Fake Jesse Orosco and Fake Ron Gardenhire wearing 19 (cropped on the left, trust me) and Fake Larry Bowa in the 2.

If you haven’t seen the movie it’s lots of fun. And if you didn’t enjoy Art Howe’s time in Flushing…well then you’ll love it.

Mets re-sign Scott Hairston

METS RE-SIGN OUTFIELDER SCOTT HAIRSTON

FLUSHING, N.Y., January 11, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced the club has re-signed outfielder Scott Hairston to a one-year major league contract.

Hairston, 31, batted .235 (31-132) with 20 runs scored, eight doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 24 RBI in 79 games with the Mets last season.

The 6-0, 204-pounder hit three pinch-hit home runs in 2011, one shy of the single-season franchise record shared by Mark Carreon (1989) and Danny Heep (1983).

He started at all three outfield positions, appearing in 10 games (four starts) in leftfield, 10 games (eight starts) in centerfield and 15 games (11 starts) in rightfield.  The Fort Worth, TX native also had a career-high five RBI on July 16 at Philadelphia.

Hairston has hit 75 career home runs and driven in 222 runs in 643 major league games with Arizona, San Diego, Oakland and the Mets.
