Shea’s Perfect Game

You open a new ballpark and you hope that magic strikes.  It did for Shea Stadium in 1964 on the first day of summer in the ballpark – which also happened to be Father’s Day.  A perfect game was thrown that day.

Unfortunately – and maybe predictably – it was the Mets who were kept off the basepaths that day as Jim Bunning of the Phillies tossed the gem.  Here is the back page of the New York Post from Monday, June 22, 1964

Update – Since I first wrote this post I sent the paper to former Senator Bunning’s home (easy enough to find his address if you know how to use Google).  He was gracious enough to send it back signed right over the Shea scoreboard.

Nice job by The 7 Line: $7,000 for Tuesday’s Children

Great job by the 7 Line.  I shall continue to encourage Darren to use his awesome powers for good (and not picking on the Mets.)  Nice nice job…

I just cut this check for Tuesday’s Children. You guys stepped up to the plate big time for the charity and words can’t express how good it feels to organize something like this. The tragedy of 9/11 touched so many and this Piazza moment 10 days later really lifted the spirits of so many when they needed it most. A home run doesn’t change the world but it gave people a reason to smile and cheer even for just that second. New York needed it.

Mets Yearbook marathon today

The great Faith and Fear has the details of today’s Mets Yearbook marathon along with some solid commentary on the project.

I’d still love to see SNY make modern versions of these, deliberately kitschy and with tat eternal optimism.

We know the Mets brand guys, you aren’t hiding anything for us if Mets Yearbook 2011’s hopes don’t pan out.

The ‘thon starts at 1:30

Springsteen to play Citi Field?

Stan is a respected “in the know” Springsteen blogger.

Springsteen’s announced dates take him through July 28th, and the Mets do have that long west coast swing starting on July 26th. Hmmm.

Pure speculation, but it beats talking about financials.

Are the Mets expecting to draw 2.5 million in 2012?

Hmmm, the Times just published an article at 1:53 and they wrote this..

S.&P. also described as “aggressive” the team’s preliminary projection that attendance will rise to 2.5 million in 2012 from 2.29 million last season. It said attendance was likely to keep falling and that a third of its luxury suites are up for renewal in 2012.

Wait, the Mets think they will draw 2.5 million this year?  They think attendance will go up?  Did the Times get that right?  My oh my the Mets are seemingly optimistic.
