Excerpts From Strawberry’s Book

Deadspin has excerpts from Strawberry’s new book.

Nothing that exciting.  They drank beer etc. and Kevin Mitchell was a thug.  Maybe Cahsen was right?

Kevin Mitchell was a thug. There’s no other way to put it. He grew up in the ghetto of San Diego, where real gang warfare was an everyday thing on the streets. Mitch was shot in the back when he was a teenager, and a stepbrother was shot and killed in a gang throw-down. When he came into baseball, he was still basically a gangbanger in uniform. Mitch didn’t have a medium setting on his dial. When a scuffle broke out he went straight to the kill setting. … Even those of us on the same team with him were kind of terrified of Mitch. I got into a scrap with him once in the minor leagues, when a bunch of us were shooting hoops and talking trash at each other the way guys do. He exploded into a completely berserk rage at something I said, knocked me down with fists that were like sledgehammers, then went off to grab a bat to finish the job. Me and the rest of the guys didn’t wait around for him to come back.

"Who is Skillman?"

If you switch over to SNY you’ll see a microcosm of why I hate the WBC.

It’s spring training so I won’t freak too much about the lopsided score, but a coworker just glared at the TV and asked “Who is Skillman?”

Skillman?

#12.  Oh you mean Cory Sullivan.  Had to expalin to coworker that half the Mets aren’t there, so “Skillman” it is!

Then we took a peek at YES and saw a Team USA pitcher look awesome against some guys who won’t be on the Yankees.  We wondered who it was.

Heath Bell.

Coworker reminded me he was on the Mets.   He was?  He looks awesome, why did they get rid of him?

November 15, 2006: Traded by the New York Mets with Royce Ring to the San Diego Padres for Jon Adkins and Ben Johnson.

Mr Adkins was released by the Mets in 2007.  Mr. Johnson was granted free agency by the Mets in December 2007 although they have since re-signed him.   Mr. Bell is now the Padres closer and looks awesome against Yankee scrubs.

Strawberry Honest: Would Have Done Steroids

Strawberry must read the Mets Police.  I was just saying yesterday how I’d like to go back in time and give him steroids.  Now he goes and says:

“Hell yeah I would have used them.  Are you kidding me? I mean, c’mon. Some things are part of what athletes go through and they happen …We’re competitive creatures, and we have tremendous drive, a high tolerance, all these things. I’m not saying that it was the right thing to do. But if that was going on in the 80s, that probably would have been in my system too.”

And he would have hit the ball 600 feet….and still left us for LA (sniff).

Single Season Tickets (And Red Sox Tix) Will Go On Sale…

Some ticket infro from the Mets.  Those St. John’s tickets sold in a flushing flash so my guess is that the Sox games will go quickly too.

I was kind of into the Red Sox games until the St. John’s games made them much less special.  I may try to hit the Bronx that weekend since I don’t think I have $300 to go to Opening Day at New New Yankee.  I have my opening night tickets for C-Field (opening “night” makes me mad.  Idiots.)

it’s interesting that April and May tickets go on sale and not the entire season.

The New York Mets today announced that tickets for two exhibition games against the Boston Red Sox at Citi Field will go on sale this Friday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. Single game tickets for April and May Regular Season home games will go on sale Sunday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Both sales will be exclusively online at Mets.com, LosMets.com, and by phone at (718) 507-TIXX; there will be no in- person sale at Citi Field on either date. The Mets in the weeks ahead will announce the on sale date for single game tickets for the balance of the season.

Single game ticket prices start at $6 for the April 3-4 exhibition games, and $11 for Regular Season games.

Francesca vs the Mets

I’m not all that interested in the Mets vs. Mike Francesca beef (Mike is accused of being un-Mets friendly), but it does interest me that it has made the Washington Post.

It reminds me of when Howie Rose was banished from the Mets pre and post games.  You’ll remember that the Mets thought it was a good idea to have Todd Kalas buffer between the WFAN programming and Howie’s Mets Extra rants.

It’s a good thing to accept criticism.  It keeps you honest.  If the Mets win a World Series they’ll find they are far less criticized.  Attempting to silence the critics doesn’t help.
