"Orange, Blue and You" / "We Believe in 2010" Mets marketing

Once again Peter hooks me up…if you click here and look down at the bottom of the page you’ll see three different videos related to the 2010 Mets marketing which has the theme “We believe in 2010.”

A few points:

You have David Wright telling me that “we believe in ORANGE BLUE AND YOU.”

Awesome.  Then let’s wear orange and blue and you’ll get the me part.  “Orange, blue and you” is now in your marketing so let’s keep the black jerseys and especially those hideous blue/black caps in the closet.

“We believe in comebacks.”  Ok, I’ll roll with you.

“We believe in two thousand and ten.”  Pet-peeve of mine, drop the “and” – plus it’s time to say “twenty ten.”  I’m off-topic.

I can’t embed the video.   As I discussed last week, if I were able to embed an MLB.com video, baseball would likely go out of business.  Why would they want to make it easy for me to share a marketing campaign with you……

…and then make you sit through a 30 second ad to see it.   I know we have to monetize everything (and yes I try to make a few bucks here and there on this site…wouldn’t you like to buy some Jets tickets over there on the right?)…but it’s a marketing campaign, don’t you want people to see it?

Is it me, or do they whip out “believe” a little too often, I’d argue that it’s ours but Tug took it with him to Philly.  (Speaking of Tug, come back this afternoon for a look at cool Tug jersey).

Orange, blue and you.   I am sure I will be quoting that about 10,000 times in Twentyten.

In case you’re wondering…here’s some quality yet suspect Wikipedia:

  • “Inaugural Season at Citi Field” (2009)
  • “Last Season at Shea” (2008)
  • “Your Season Has Come.”(2007)
  • “The Team. The Time. The Mets.” (2006)
  • “Next Year is Now” (2005)
  • “The New Mets” (2005)
  • “Catch the Energy” (2004)
  • “Always Believe” (2002)
  • “Amazin’ Again” (2000)
  • “Are You Ready? New Year, New Team, New Magic” (1999)
  • “Show Up At Shea!” (1998)
  • “Believe in the ’98 Mets!” (1998)
  • “Generation K” (1995)
  • “Hardball Is Back!” (1992)
  • “Excellence. Again And Again” (1989)
  • “Lets Go for it Again” (1988)
  • “Lets Do it Again” (1987)
  • “Baseball Like it Oughta Be” (1986)
  • “Catch the Rising Stars” (1985)
  • “There’s No Power Shortage Here” (1983)
  • “The Magic is Back” (1980)
  • “You Gotta Believe!” (1973)
  • “Meet the Mets.” (1962)

Again, click here to get closer to the video – hunt for the needle in the haystack (bottom right), then sit through an ad, then buy tickets.

David Wright isn’t going anywhere, come on.

Oh man the internet is fun.  I’m half-asleep this morning on that first cup of coffee and I see a bunch of ‘David Wright to Red Sox?” type items on twitter (I’m @metspolice).

Seems that this guy wrote one sentence in the Globe.   Here’s the sentence:

1. Seems like David Wright is no longer a great fit for the Mets (because of Citi Field), but he would be for the Red Sox (because of Fenway)

That’s nice.  It even makes sense.  Sure David Wright banging balls off the green monster is a good idea.  Peyton Manning would be a great QB for the Browns next season.   Now let me tell you why I think Jose Reyes will be the first man on Mars….at 26 years old he is just coming into his prime.  His natural athletic ability suggests he’ll more easily adapt to a long-term space mission than you or I…plus with the Mars mission being at least 15 years away he can finish ou his Mets career before focusing on NASA in his 40’s.

Can you imagine what would happen if the Mets announced Wright were traded?  I’ll even give you a Seaver deal…you can have John Lackey, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and two prospects.

Actually if the Red Sox called with that you’d have to look at it wouldn’t you?  Ha!

Anyway, all this is for a 3am call to WFAN.

I find myself in a weird place this morning….my brain thinks that Reyes/Wright/Bay/Beltran/Francoeur/a decent Castillo can carry Murphy and the catcher.   Then again me, you and Sports Illustrated had the Mets winning the 2009 World Series.  It all comes down to pitching.

New York: occasionally Mets-town

Here’s an article that breaks down baseball attendance over the years, and it may surprise you kids but the Mets owned this town a few times over the years.

Not for one moment would I pretend that an enormous number of “fans” that attended Shea from 1985-1992 bothered returning until the late 1990’s. We can all agree that success breeds attendance. The point is rather a questioning of the undying loyalty that is preached in New York and around the country from the vast majority of Yankees “fans”. Had the Yankee fan base truly been comprised of die-hards, the 1985-1992 attendance swoon would have never happened.

The Francesa news was that the Mets will announce Bay next week

Mike said the Mets will announce Bay next week, assuming nothing turns up in the physicals.  I guess that’s big news but I feel cheated.

We now resume complaining about obstructed views and uniforms and have turned WFAN off.

Mets Police Decade In Review: Mr. Met, Pedro and my mom

Continuing our look back on Mets Police articles of the past…this one from Dan on July 13th 2008, and always one of the most popular.  Here’s “Mr. Met, Pedro and my mom.”  Shea looks better and better in old photos doesn’t it?

From time to time we here at the Mets Police have given the Mets grief on some of the things they do – it’s what we are here for after all. Today however I must tip my cap and publilcly thank the Mets, Mr. Met, and especially Pedro Martinez for something that was very personal.
Saturday was my mom’s 71st birthday. A few thing about my mom. She is a small Irish woman who came here over 50 years ago but still has her accent. Back in the 60’s she worked for a company that had a box at Shea and she attended a number of games (she likes to tell people how she sat next to Joan Payson). But she stopped going (and stopped working) after I was born. So she has not been to Shea since 1966. Now to give you an idea how much of a fan she is, during the 10th inning of Game 6, she had her rosary out and was kneeling in front of the TV set saying Hail Mary’s as fast as she could.
My sister, through some people she knows, was able to get a field box at Shea for Saturday’s game. She also was able to contact someone she knows who works for the Mets and let him know that our mom would be there on her birthday.
So, we go to the game – my parents, my sister, and I. Our mom is tickled pink to be at Shea. At the gate they are handing out teddy bears as a promotion to all kids. Of course my mom wants one, and as soon as they hear that it’s her 71st, no problem, they give her one. That was very nice.
Skip ahead to the fourth inning. One of the staff comes over and lets my mom know that during the 4th, Mr. Met is coming over to give her a present. Middle of the 4th and here comes Mr. Met to present her with the 1-800-FLOWERS birthday cake bouquet. Mr. Met sat down behind her and she is giddy – starts talking to him and laughing. Then at the end of the inning they put her and my dad on Diamond Vision with Mr. Met. Priceless!
So we thought that was the highlight of the day. After the game, we took some pictures, then went up to check out the Diamond Club. While up there she (as only an older Irish woman does) starts chatting with the security guys – asking about Pedro, her favorite Met, and where he might be. Security actually tells us that because of the Billy Joel concert set up, the players are coming out from Gate D today. So Mom now wants to go down to see if she can spot Pedro. All 0f a sudden this 71 yr old woman is acting like a 16 yr old.
We get to Gate D and looking around, set ourselves up at the end of the crowd that has gathered. Wouldn’t you know one of the security guys mom had talked to is now right near us. He points out Pedro’s driver to us and tells mom and I to go over to him and tell him it’s her birthday. We go over, I talk to the guy (Angel) and ask if he thought Pedro would take a picture with my mom for her birthday. Next thing I know he gets a cop to escort us over to Pedro’s car.
When Pedro comes out, Angel tells him about my mom – he immediately comes over and give her a huge hug and kiss. Security cordon off an area around Pedro, his cars, and us. Then they start talking – seriously their conversation went on for a good 5 minutes – he was the nicest guy to her. When she told him he was her favorite player, he said “Really? Me? Not David Wright?” She said something else to him that had him laughing. Really, a very very nice guy. I thanked him and he said it was a pleasure to meet us then hugged my mom again.
Walking back to the car people kept coming up to her wishing her a Happy Birthday and congratulating her on meeting Pedro.
So a hundred thousand thank yous to the Mets, Mr. Met, and especially Pedro Martinez for making my mom’s birthday an amazingly memorable occassion.
These 2 pictures say it all:
