Sure Mike, I’ll bite.  It’s a slow news week.

Mike Francesa said he’ll have a “major major update” on the Mets on Tuesday.

None of the beat reporters have anything.  If it were a player signing they’d have it.   So it’s something “internal” and nothing actually newsworthy.

The Mets signed a “multiyear” deal with WFAN at the end of 2008 so I doubt it’s a contract extension for that.

Some radio stations have messed around with doing one-team sportsradio on their HD channels (Penguins and Cowboys) but you wouldn’t announce that on December 29th.

Some have speculated it’s about the Mets Hall of Fame, but outside of the blogosphere is that major news?

I think Mike hyped his radio show, bored Mets fan got all excited and now all are set up to kill Francesca for not delivering.

My guess:  Omar or Jeff is calling in for some set-up call to promote some feel-good item.    The team needs to get the ticketholders to blink before the 12/31 deadline….perhaps the Seaver related item that Mets VP Craig Marino told us about will be announced to entice fans to renew.  Craig said Seaver would be honored in a “major way.”

Or Mike Piazza day as part of some 10th anniversary of the 2000 World Series team (y’all missed that that one is coming already!).

While I’ve got you, I’ll pull a Francesa of my own.  You know that horrible injury riddled season the Mets just had?  They wouldn’t sell a t-shirt making light of it would they?   Come back at 7am to see.

Today’s average Mets fan is Eric.

1976, the summer I was 10 years old, and opened my first pack of baseball
cards to see Tom Seaver staring back at me from the top of the deck (no
kidding).My friend nearly choked on his bubble gum. I’ve been hooked ever since.

I was actually at the Grand Slam Single game, but my favorite memory is
going to my first game at Shea with my grandfather. I looked out at the expanse
of the place and asked what all the green stuff was sitting outside the field
of play. Turns out it was the outfield. I spent most of the game trying to
comprehend how anything could be so immense. I’ve felt the same way about the
game since.

Sitting in the stands for Game Four of the ’88 playoffs, ninth inning, two
balls no strikes to Mike Scioscia. I turned to my friend and actually said “can
this guy hit home runs?” and then watched the ball bounce a few times in the
bullpen. The team has never recovered. I feel kind of responsible.

Remind ownership what makes the Mets the Mets (their “brand”, if you will)
is that they are a team that plays smart, small baseball, with great defense, great pitching,
good hitting and a ton of heart. They’re not the Yankees. If I wanted to root
for the Yankees I would (and I don’t). Oh, and give me a manager like Bobby
Valentine again.

Here’s a team that gave their fans two years straight of epic, end of the
year, heartbreaking collapses followed by the most unwatchable, uninspired
season of baseball since M. Donald Grant left town. I hate to have anyone lose
their jobs, especially now, but it’s hard to see why the current GM should be
back. I hope I’m wrong.

Then go to the link to view Casey Stengel holding up the Mets uniform in January 1962 – except note the underline (or “swoosh” as Osh41 calls it).  Who knew?  Maybe if we had known we wouldn’t have hated on the swoosh jerseys so much in the 1990s.

Question for the (other) black haters – would you trade underlines (and use the Casey rationalization) for no black?  I would.   Given how awful the team looks these days, this doesn’t look so bad now.  At least it’s blue.
