Five Questions For An Average Mets Fan (Fan #68)

Today’s average Mets fan is Frank.


1. When did you start following the Mets?

From Day 1….1962

 

2. What is your favorite Mets memory?

Sitting in the loge by the right field foul pole during game 7 1986

 

3. What is your worst Mets memory or experience?

When they traded Seaver…but probably getting eliminated from the playoffs and attending the last game at Shea. Then having the ceremony.  I grew up at Shea, so did my kids…many, many memories…very sad.

 

4. If you could change one off-field thing about the franchise what
would it be?
New owners.  The fish stinks from the head down
 
5. If you owned the team starting tomorrow, what is the first thing
you would change?
New GM, fire Dave Howard.  Listen to the fans…read all the blogs…put fans first.

New York Mets ticket office: working Christmas Eve but not communicating

Quick note:  Mets Police is more or less operating normally through today and tomorrow…so if you’re not celebrating, or just want to escape your family and surf the ‘net we’ll be here.

Two emails this morning from The Media Goon.  Goon has already renewed his tickets and asked for an upgrade.  The Mets have told him he has to wait before being allowed to spend more money.   Really?  Here’s Goon:

The Mets ticket office just called to ask me if i was renewing for next year. I told them I was probably in the minority of people that actually renewed and more then likely only person who asked for an upgrade too. I then go to him its really bad when your calling everyone to make sure they renew, even the people that already have. I won’t know about my upgrade till 1st week of Janurary becaue of the DEC 31st deadline

Don’t they check you off some list once you do pay?

But wait there’s more…

Someone else from the ticket office just called me..Told me they havent forgotten about my request for an upgrade. He is the one that handles all the sunday plans so he will be calling me back in the 1st wave of calls after Dec 31st about upgrading.

That’s good that they called him back.  I’m kind of surprised the tix office is working today.   Why make this guy wait, he wants to spend money – it’s not like they won’t have any seats available.   Maybe they want to make sure he gets a good upgrade, and it’s actually in his favor?

Frank Cashen wanted George Michael to replace Lindsay Nelson?

From the Wash Post:

In 1979, Wolf moved from WABC across town to WCBS. Michael said he began to search out new opportunities himself. Professionally, New York was becoming quicksand for him. He knew what he wanted and what he wanted wasn’t New York. He turned down an offer made by the New York Mets’ Frank Cashen to replace Lindsay Nelson as the team’s play-by-play man.

The Japanese Greg Maddux and other Mets mistakes

From time to time on this site you’ll see me drop the line “The Japanese so-and-so”, often “the Japanese Greg Maddux” or just last week “the Japanese J.J. Putz.”

The Mets have this wonderfully horrible history of signing overrated players from Japan and trying to sell them to the citizens of Flushing as equivalent players.

You will thoroughly enjoy this article in the Times.   Shinjo, ugh.

Interesting story about the new Mets uniforms

Again, I remind all this is a fanblog not 60 Minutes.

As the story goes, there was a faction inside Metsdom that wanted to issue the retros without the black dropshadow so that they would be true retro, not a marketing ploy.

The marketing folks vetoed it because supposedly the fans like black.   I’ve heard anecdotes of this before.

So I went to the shop on mlb.com and typed in Mets.  Saw a link for “best sellers” on the bottom, and here’s the list as it was at 6pm Sunday night.  I’m not sure it proves anything one way or another…the throwback and McCartney items are new..I guess people are buying black t-shirts, but the fleece is blue, the t is pink, and the cap up top is $10 and a nice stocking stuffer.

By the way, multiple sources tell me that if you walk into the clubhouse store you can get two “throwbacks” for $100.  Also notice that this feed calls it an “alternate” jersey.

Did the marketing folks win out?   Were they right or would a new pink Mets jersey sell just as well if the actual team wore it every third day?
