New York Mets Trade Ryan Church For Jeff Francouer

Went for pizza, came back and wow – Ryan Church (who Jerry clearly didn’t like) is gone, and Jeff Francouer is in.   Francoeur is 25, with .250 5 and 35.   Jeff joins the team tomorrow.

UPDATE:  see NY post for more:

“We were able to get a right-handed hitter and Golden Glove right fielder in a big ballpark like ours,” GM Omar Minaya said. “Some consider him the best defensive right fielder in baseball.”

New York Mets Old Timer’s Day Is Too Much Work?

Mets Blog just tweeted about this:  Note: Old Timer’s Day is Too Much Work

Evan Roberts says someone at MetsCo says that old timers day is too hard.  Matt Cerrone at Mets Blog basically writes what I would have written…

…so go check out Matt’s rant over on the big blog and I’ll start by helping the Mets out.

Meeting:
Hey Howie, we’re going to have OT Day so we’re gonna need you to work on TV for an hour, OK?  Cool.

Ron, Keith, Bobby Ojeda – come downstairs at 12:30 ok.  Someone call Franco and Mazzilli, ok that’s 5 guys.  Give Seaver the $50,000 and tell him we’ll open a wine shop in Citi Field – that’s 6.   Mookie is doing nothing.  Doc has been at every third game.   That’s 8 guys.

Someone call the Ducks and check their schedule…get Gary and Buddy in here and we’ll promote some Ducks games.  That’s 10 guys.

OK, Timmy the intern – need you to call everyone on the 69, 86 and 00 Mets and invite them…let me know how you do.

Let Timmy the Intern make some calls, see what you got and take it from there.   This can’t be hard.  Somehow the Yankees can pull it off.

Oh Mets Blog also mentions they sold one of the three 1986 trophies for $32,000.

To all this:  Really?

UPDATE:  The Yankees announced their list which includes Lee Mazzilli and David Cone.   So between those two guys, Keith, Ron, Bobby O and Hojo you are well one your way with very very little effort.

ESPN’s Take On Ollie’s Start

Ronnie sent this one over, adding…

They rarely link to (Rob) Neyer over @  (other site I have no issue with) but you don’t drink the Kool-aid:

Can we not sugarcoat this thing? Perez’s start last night was just short of a disaster.

Just to sum up: This season, Perez has thrown 36 innings above the Double-A level. In those 36 innings, he has walked 37 batters. I’m all for giving a guy with a solid history a bit of rope, but it always strikes me as odd when a player fails miserably, is exiled to correct a particular flaw, doesn’t correct the flaw … and is un-exiled anyway.

Neyer’s piece is here.

I agree, that was not a good start.

Trivia Contest

Sparks sent this in:

The SNY broadcast put up this graphic during the game Thursday night.  Amazingly, no one in the booth asked the obvious question of “What else do four of these guys have in common?”

The answer is that they have color photos right?

Jimmie Foxx is like the NY Baseball Giants.  Never mentioned.

Sports Illustrated 1969 New York Mets Cover This Week

Look at this cover.  Look at the uniforms.

Does anyone dare argue with me that these look better than anything the 2009 Mets wear?

Why is this so hard for the Wilpon Regime?

Just wear these.

I’d like to know where they got these jackets.   Buying something blue and orange without black is almost as hard as buying New York Giants anything.
