Sterling or Scully: Mets announcer ruins walk off with unnecessary mention of wall

OK I need to shake off the David Wright blues, so I’m gonna jump in the pool and do my Best Gary’s Balls thing.

Gare man, this is clearly gone.  Why are you mentioning the wall?  Call these like you did Rosario.

Here, let me show you how a Hall of Famer does it…

See Gare, the second guy (Verdict: Scully!) captured the excitement of the moment. The first guy (Verdict: Sterling) should never have gotten lazy and crutched on “back near the wall” – just eliminate that from the call and it’s a great call. But the laziness is something John Sterling does. Don’t be John Sterling.

I’m truly sad about David Wright, Captain of the New York Mets

If you follow me on twitter you know that most nights I say something like ‘I don’t care if they win/lose, as long as they do it in under three hours.”

This news, this news is different.  This time I care.

I have been in a funk all day since the press conference.

I went upstairs and got a David Wright jersey, a black one actually, and put it on.  I bought tickets.

I imagined myself at Citi Field at the game, and I for real got choked up.  How will any of us get through that day without crying.

I keep thinking about July 4, 1938 and Lou Gehrig.  Different circumstances and yet not.  The Captain saying goodbye.  How will we not all cry our eyes out?

In some ways I think this would have been easier on me if I just got some random press release in the winter letting me know David’s career had ended two years ago.  I kind of knew it had.

But this….so different….one…last….game.    I am getting misty eyed even typing this.

I bought two tickets, then texted my son.  He’s in.

Back to my opening line about not caring and caring.  There are times when the Mets Family has to come together, and it’s not for bobbleheads or to watch Austin Jackson and Todd Frazier play out the string.  They might be Mets but they aren’t METS.  John Franco may have had a C for a while, but David is CAPTAIN.  This is different.  He is different.

David Wright is everything you could have ever wanted in a player, in a captain.  I’m just kind of stunned and numb.  I don’t know how I will get through that game, but I will be there.

I just edited the title and got choked up again…holy cow if David gives a speech that day I can’t even…..

Hey @mets, you should all wear orange undershirts for David Wright on September 29

I propose that the Mets wear orange undershirts on 9/29,

If you have followed me for years you know I love me some “uniform violations” (they are MLB’s rules, not mine)

In the past, the above was a violation….

Orange is not the team’s primary color, and orange is clearly not gray.  Violation.

However, the 2018 MLB Rules have different phrasing!

Hey – it just says “a uniform solid color” – say ORANGE.

It would be a nice little touch that day.  Steal this idea Mets.

Oh and while I have your attention – this should be obvious but I know you guys  like to mess up – wear pinstripes that day, not blue.

LOLMets promoted “Davis Wright” news conference

I need to shake myself out of the David Wright Blues, so let me go for some LOLMets action.   This screen grab is from Mets.com about 1:40pm.  I know the guy was gone a long time, but is the Mets’ social media intern like 11 years old?

I’m totally making Davis Wright in MLB The Show

David Wright to play one last game for the Mets

Even though this day would come sooner or later I am stunned.  I can’t believe I am writing this blog post, and I don’t know how I could even write another post after this one.

As I am sure you have heard, David Wright will be activated on September 25th, start at third on the 29th, and then call it a career.   He is not “retiring” but will be “physically unable to play” – so that sounds like a road for (not being jerky) the insurance policy getting David his money for the next two years.  Kind of like the end of Mo Vaughn’s career.

Also, not important today but interesting, this explains why the Mets tried so hard last night to avoid dropping a doubleheader onto Saturday the 29th when the Marlins come back.

I won’t say it feels like yesterday but it doesn’t seem like all that long ago DW was brought up.

I wonder if we will see some sort of patch that weekend?

Again, I can’t believe I am writing this post – and don’t know how to go on from here – so I will just go on and post whatever I would have posted normally, whether it’s a Sterling or Scully or whatever else pops up this afternoon.   Right now, I’m just kind of sad and stunned, even though we knew it was coming.
