Will Captain Wright Grow a Mustache?

With Wright signing the extension (told ya) Terry Collins said he would discuss becoming team captain with him.  So this being Movember of course the question then becomes, would Wright grow a mustache if he became Captain?  After all, two of the Mets captains in the past have been known for their mo’s.

Of course speaking of mo’s, today is the final day of Movember, which means it’s the last day to donate to the Blue Cap Army’s fund raiser to help fight prostate cancer.

The 7 Line is on board with these efforts and will be donating 20% of the sales from this Bobby V tee shirt to The Blue Cap Army’s Movember fund raiser.

Of course you can always donate directly to The Blue Cap Army – whatever you can give will go towards helping fight testicular and prostate cancer.

Approximately 1 of every 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point within their lifetime.  In perspective that means that 5 members of the Mets 40 man roster will probably contract prostate cancer.

Not counting some forms of skin cancer, prostate cancer in the United States is—

  • The most common cancer in men, no matter your race or ethnicity.
  • The second most common cause of death from cancer among white, African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic men.
  • The fourth most common cause of death from cancer among Asian/Pacific Islander men.
  • More common in African-American men compared to white men.
  • Less common in American Indian/Alaska Native and Asian/Pacific Islander men compared to white men.
  • More common in Hispanic men compared to non-Hispanic men.

In 2008 (the most recent year for which numbers are available)—

  • 214,633 men in the United States were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • 28,471 men in the United States died from prostate cancer.

Mets’ David Wright is never ever going anywhere (Penultimate edition)

20121130-070822.jpg

As I told you many many times here and on @metspolice, David Wright is never ever going anywhere.

If Tom Seaver is The Franchise, David Wright is The Brand. He’s the face that you can slap on the cover of anything that needs a cover. He’s the one that will greet the VIPs at 4pm before night games. He’s not going to be caught with a zebra at 3am in a shady neighborhood. Clean cut and marketable.

David can show up at every Big Day starting in 2020 and all the way past the end of Bobby Bonilla’s contract. The Brand.

My 9 year old’s favorite player will be around until Junior has disposable income of his own and can buy the old man some tickets ($63 for Opening Day in 2020 is still a ripoff even at 2020 prices by the way).

The Mets aren’t any better than yesterday, but they have finally defined themselves as a brand. Now go win a World Series while dressed nicely so I can shut down my blog.

Oh, and just one more thing….

….I told you so.

Not Confirmed Yet: Mets Ink Wright to New Deal

Hey there folks. It’s 430 am on Friday and I just woke up because my body is on stupid film production time. I just cleared my eyes and saw this report. No idea how true it is yet because I haven’t see a confirmation yet but what the hell let’s slide this bit of Mets news out into the world.

From MLB.Com.

The Mets and third baseman David Wright came to terms on a seven-year, $122 million extension on Friday to keep the six-time All-Star and face of the franchise in Flushing, according to Ed Coleman of WFAN Radio in New York.

The Mets have yet to make an announcement on the deal.

Wright, who will turn 30 on Dec. 20, will make $16 million in 2013, the final year of his existing contract. Then he’ll make $122 million over the next seven years. The deal will make Wright the highest-paid player in club history. In total, Wright’s new deal will be for $138 million over the next eight years. Johan Santana’s six-year, $137.5 million contract from 2008 had previously been the club’s most expensive deal.

Coleman, WFAN’s Mets beat reporter, reported the deal just before 2 a.m. ET on Friday.

Wright, who grew up a Mets fan in Virginia, was drafted by New York with the 38th pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, and made his Major League debut in 2004. In his nine-year career in Flushing, he has taken over the franchise lead in hits, with 1,426, and RBIs, with 818. He hit .306 with 21 homers and 93 RBIs in 156 games for New York in 2012.

From MetsBlog

I’m thrilled this is out of the way before the front office leaves for the MLB Winter Meetings, which start next Monday in Nashville. Again, as I mentioned this morning, there is lots of buzz that the Mets hope to be active next week. I don’t think they plan to sit on their hands, as some fans fear. They are working a few trade scenarios, most including R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese, and I’m fairly certain they’re eyeing deals with one or two light-weight free agents. I have no idea if trades will be made. However, according to people from other organizations, the Mets are talking and looking to be active. I hope things go their way, because only re-signing Wright is not nearly enough to improve this team for next year.

Read the whole Article from Mr Matt Cerrone here.  This has me very curious also- “Again, as I mentioned this morning, there is lots of buzz that the Mets hope to be active next week.

PS- I also hope this news is true about Wright because I would have a lot of out of date Mets Jerseys then with his name on the backs.

Mets fans holiday gift guide

Yes, yes it’s your favorite capitalist blogger again.  You should be buying a blue Mets jersey because when you’re sitting at home on Opening Day you might as well look good.

This box set makes a killer gift for under $50 which is less than an upper deck ticket for Opening Day! New York Mets 50th Anniversary Collector’s DVD SET.  So far this is a best-seller and quite a few people have been purchasing them.  $29.99 TODAY

Also, everyone likes 43 better than 63, right?  What Mets fan wouldn’t love to read Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball

Now this isn’t Mets related but it’s still a great gift, a great deal, and far cheaper than a ticket to Opening Day.  $30 for the three movies on Blu-Ray!!! The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman Begins / The Dark Knight / The Dark Knight Rises) [Blu-ray].  You could buy two sets for less than the price of one Opening Day ticket!!  The DVD version is only $19.96 – you could get THREE for the price of one Opening Day ticket.  Which would your cousin rather have in his stocking?  A cool BD box set or a ticket to a game in April.  No brainer…

Also let’s not forget @metsgm Sandy Alderson’s favorite show Homeland: The Complete First Season.  At just $19.99 you could get three copies…one for Sandy, one for yourself and one for a friend.  Or you could buy one ticket to Opening Day.  Opening Day seems quite expensive, doesn’t it?

Last time I spoke to Sandy he wasn’t into The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season but it still would be a nice gift for him or someone you love.  This one is only $18.99 so there’s that math again where I multiply by three and make a sarcastic illustrative point.  In case you haven’t seen it this is a show about I dunno, vampires or something.

Speaking of Zombies..you can kill some in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.  This one is $59.93 which is…you get the joke by now.

Back to the Mets, if you’re looking to spend a little less…under $13 gets you the DVD of New York Mets 50 Greatest Players   And it works out that $63 minus 50 for 50 years.  You could buy FIVE of these or you could sit in the upper deck by yourself on Opening Day.  THIS ONE IS $7.99 TODAY

And Baseball Greatest Games: Santanas 2012 No-hitter is under $9!  You could buy this for seven of your friends or you could sit in the upper deck by yourself on Opening Day.  THIS ONE IS $5.99 TODAY.  So you could actually get ten!
