METS, MLB, PEOPLE MAGAZINE ANNOUNCE WINNER OF
COMMUNITY ALL-STAR CAMPAIGN

Marguerite Baber to be Honored at the 2010 All-Star Game on FOX and
Featured in Special Pre-Game Ceremony July 13 at Angels Stadium

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 28, 2010 – The New York Mets, Major League Baseball and PEOPLE Magazine today announced Marguerite Baber as the Mets winner of the “All-Stars Among Us” campaign that recognizes individuals who are serving their communities in extraordinary ways.

Out of the three “All-Star” finalists representing the Mets, Baber of Bayonne, N.J., was chosen by fans across the nation for her community service through The Simpson-Baber Foundation, which has raised more than $1.5 million to support educational, social and recreational opportunities for the autism community.

Baber, 50, created two organizations to support the autism community, motivated by her own experience as the parent of an autistic child. She started the Simpson-Baber Foundation (http://simpson-baber.org/) in 1995, and in 2002 began the Busy Bee Program, an early intervention initiative that helps autistic children maximize their developmental and educational potential.

Baber and the other 29 “All-Stars Among Us,” one representing each MLB Club, will attend and be honored during the pre-game ceremony of the 81st Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 13 on FOX beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT (8:00 p.m. ET).

Born Behind Enemy Lines

I have an uphill battle ahead of me.

A few weeks ago my daughter was born in a Philadelphia-area hospital.  Phillies logos and paraphernalia were all over the place – there was even a Phillies banner hanging behind the nurse’s station in the maternity ward.

She will be a Mets fan

Of course I had to outfit her in Mets gear as soon as possible (even if a bit big for her).

But seriously, I know I’m not the first Dad to go through this.  It’s going to take a lot of effort (and some guilt perhaps?) to make sure she doesn’t grow up rooting for the red & white, but comes to love the blue & orange.

Any other Dad’s out there facing the same thing?  How have you dealt with it?

An idea for Mets Tickets “Pick your pack” and why it won’t work

Tom had an idea:

I wish they had a “you pick what games work for you pack”. Kind of like the premium picks pack, but for 15 games in the promenade. Do it before the promotional schedule is released. And you can pick who you want to see and that’ll decide what it costs. Why don’t you just buy 15 random games you ask? To make it a package you stipulate that in order to go to Opening day or the subway series, you buy 15 games, but at least you can make it work for you, instead of being told what games you’re going to.

Tom, I get what you are saying, and in the Utopian World it might work, but the Mets are a BUSINESS (not yelling at you, yelling at everyone who forgets that this isn’t 9 kids out to hit a ball with a stick) – it’s a business that wants to make money.

Let’s look at my Saturday Plus plan.  Do you think the Mets think, “Wow, Shannon would really love to come on Thursday night!”  Nope.  I imagine someone thought, “Ugh, Thursday night against the Tigers.  We won’t draw well that night.”  So that game made the plan.  Or so my imagination thinks.

Under your plan we could all decide to go to Opening Day, some Saturdays, maybe three agianst the Phillies, screw all those April games and screw those late September games.

That really wouldn’t help the Mets.

Of course, not buying a 15 game pack at all doesn’t help the Mets either.
