Former New York Giants Player Larry Jansen Has Died

Our friend “James Bond” has returned from one of his mysterious trips and brings us sad news.

Former major league baseball star Larry Jansen, the winning pitcher in one of the sport’s most famous games, died in his sleep early Saturday morning in the home he built in 1951 in his hometown of Verboort.
Jansen was 89.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, their 10 children, 23 grandchildren, more than 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A two-time National League All-Star, Jansen pitched eight seasons for the New York Giants (1947 to 1954) and one season with Cincinnati in 1956. He compiled a 122-89 record with a 3.58 ERA.

Oregon Live wrote a nice lengthy article about Larry, please check it out since if we don’t remember the NYG’s nobody will.

That cap he’s wearing sure looks familiar.  As dad said, “remember where you came from.”

Mr. Jansen won two pennants with the Giants…which is at two more than just about everyone on the 2009 Mets….and exactly how many the Mets have won in the last 35 seasons.

New York Mets Discover Social Media

From springwise.com:

The New York Mets are….bringing social media into the stadium. Beginning this season, a Citi Field big screen will play host to an SMS marketing system that presents a whole new way for sponsors to interact with fans, and fans with each other…….

Xerox is sponsoring ‘Citi Field’s Fan Photos’, which displays a slideshow on the big screen of photos taken by supporters with their camera phones. ‘Verizon Wireless Fan Choice Awards’ runs polls on such topics as “Who is the Met’s player of the game?”, the results of which are displayed on the screen in real-time, while Caesar’s Palace has sponsored a ‘Fan Forum’ that lets fans air their views on a given subject. Wise Snacks, meanwhile, is giving fans the opportunity to vote for their preferred ‘Eighth-Inning Sing-Along’ song, and Verizon is taking it to the next base by replying to messages from their network users with an invitation to visit their in-stadium store. It’s all novel advertising that is sure to catch the attention of stadium-goers.

Or, we could tone down the noise, tone down the distractions, have organ music and win baseball games.  Funny how the Cubs do fine…well except for that pesky bankruptcy and the 101 years without winning.

Checking In With Rod Gaspar

The Long Beach Press-Telegram caught up with a ’69 Met.

Forty years ago (today), Gaspar celebrates the anniversary of scoring the game-winning run in the tenth inning of Game 4, giving the Mets a 3-1 series lead that they turned into the title a day later.
..

Gaspar is blunt in assessing the rest of his baseball career.
“I was very immature,” he said. “I was a single guy with a nickel brain who thought he’d be in New York for the next 10 years. No excuses.”

Gary Carter Leaves Long Island Ducks For Palm Beach

I guess Gary (a) prefers the weather down there and (b) knows he blew any shot at the Mets job.

I wonder who will manage the Ducks next?

Carter played for the Montreal Expos from 1974 – 1984 and the New York Mets from 1985 – 1989, where he was a member of the 1986 Mets team that won the World Series. Carter spent a season each with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers before finishing out his 19-year playing career with a final season in Montreal. He was named to the All-Star Team 11 times, twice selected as Most Valuable Player. A winner of three Golden Glove Awards and five Silver Slugger Awards, he is a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the New York Mets Hall of Fame.
In 2003, Carter began a second successful career in baseball as a manager. He was named Gulf Coast League and Florida State League Manager of the Year in 2005 and 2006 respectively, and won the Florida State League championship in 2006 with the St. Lucie Mets. Carter led the Orange County (Calif.) Flyers to a championship in the Golden Baseball League and was honored as that league’s Manager of the Year. He managed theLong Island Ducks of the Atlantic League for the 2009 season.
Rob Avila, the present Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish coach, will assist Carter during this transition through June 1.

The couple have three children – Christy, Kimmy and D.J.  â€“ and three grandchildren. Daughter Kimmy Bloemers is the head softball coach at Palm Beach Atlantic where her husband, Kyle, serves as the athletics compliance officer.
“The Palm Beach Atlantic University community is excited to have Hall of Famer Gary Carter coaching our young men,” University President Lu Hardin said. “Gary Carter is a baseball genius and a fine Christian man. He will be an influential motivator for our players.”
“I am looking forward to becoming a Sailfish,” Carter said. “My goal is to make Palm Beach Atlantic’s baseball program the strongest Division II program in the country. But my primary goal is to help these young athletes become better Christians and prepare them for life, not just baseball.”
Palm Beach Atlantic University is a Christian university with a total enrollment of 3,200 students offering undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. Located in West Palm Beach, Florida, the University is an NCAA independent competing in 11 varsity sports.
